CHANGE
UNCLE
The call of those far ewsy places
fa seeping past my sir conditioner
now that I’ve recovered from sum-
mer’s first blast. I’ve learned that
• person can sweat and survive,
end armed with this knowledge I
hope to steal away some weekend
soon and challenge the seed ticks
and deer flies up along Cow Creek.
For some reason I always worry
when I take off on a weekend trip
I know that my yard will have
to go an extra wee* without being
cut, and I have a neighbor who
delights in catching me away.
On such Instances he always
mows his yard, and I’ll almost
swear that when he mows down
that line which separates our yards
he puts ah his weight on that lawn
mower so that it makes the shaggy
grass in my yard look taller than
it is. Of course I do the.same
thing to him, but I’ll never let
him know it
This neighbor is Don Grfvitt,
and when he’s working hours
which make yard trimming incon-
venient he often-advises me, "Now
don’t you mow your yard before
next Thursday, I won t get a
chance to cut mine before then,
and I don’t want mine looking
seedy."
I always tell him. "Okay. I
won’t." But every time I tell him
that I can hardly wait for the
soonest opportunity to tut my
yard, then make excuses later. -
any of them move.
I Joined other residents of the
Orange area Friday'in regretting
Coach Wilson Waites’ decision to
leave Ms position at Stark High
School here for another fob in Mis-
sissippi. The only people whom I
can think of who were glad to
hear the news are coaches of
teams which have been competing
with the Tigers during the past
two years, *
I met Waites personally only
once, much to my regret. But my
admiration for him was well es-
tablished at that time. It was
shortly after he arrived ip Orange,
but I already had heard the re-
port that he nad warned thia town
from top to bottom that he was
coach of the Tigers and he would
tolerate no Interference.
He meant fust what he said, snd
ss far as I knotg there wasn't any-
one here who dared to tell him
how to run . his teaih. Rocking
chair quarterbacks lost their jobs
fast when Waites arrived, and I
hope they, still are unemployed
when we get a new man.
I'll bet you that over half of the
residents here wiH tell you quickly
that Waites is the beslt nigh school

More news pointing to the eventual alleviation of the
currently still critical unemployment situation among
building trades craftsmen in the county came during
last week- , - ' ' Rfe have a neighborhood full of
Biggest and most beneficial of these announcements folks just like him. I’d hate to see
from the long range point of view was the disclosure of
plans by Anton Dal Sasso for Schofield Place at Bridge
iity.
This will be a new community of 850 homes, all
brick, and a shopping center. It is to be constructed over
a period of several years. The name honors Dr. and Mrs.
E. C. Schofield who made the land available. Dr. Scho-
field has been a physician here since early in World War
II. Mrs. Schofield is the superintendent of Orange Me-
morial Hospital.
Biggest and most beneficial of the new construc-
tion programs from the short range point of view is one
that got under way last week. It is the Mac Arthur
Drive Shopping Center,' a commercial development
that will drastically change the retail picture in our
area.
And even before work bdgan on the center there
came word that the floor space has been increased from -
the figure used when it was first announced.
Plans for a new building for Sunset Grove Country
Club were made public during the week by Mr. and Mrs.
H. J. Lutcher Stark. This contemporary structure will
replace a building which burned some months ago.
Orange’s long-awaited new post office and federal
building will start going up soon. General Services Ad-
ministration let a contract to a Houston firm on4 bid of
(523,000. This structure will be erected on the east side
of. 4th street just north of Green avenue on property
acquired by the federal government about 10 years ago.
Land was acquired in Bridge City for a 27-bed hos-
pital and clinic to be built as a private venture by resi-
dents of the county.
