iw Beats Out Caribbean Rhythm on Oil Drums
On New Plan
SAV JUAN, Puerto Rico -E —
What may be the first "AH Ameri-
can" ,t<*i hand will, make its
North American, debut at Chicago
before the year is out -
That is the word from the l<kh
Naval District here, where a group
of United Stares sailors have
mastered the peculiar art of mak-
ing music from steel oil drums.
It all started when somebody
found out that by pitting dents of
different sizes in the top of a 55-
gallon drum, you could get sev-
eral different notes out of one
dnim. By trial and error. Trin-
idadians found that by using the
whole drum a deep bass was
achieved: that bv cutting it in va-
rious lengths the range of the notes
could bft changed.
Progress was continuous — and
foday the ‘‘ping pong drum" -
which carries the melody — has
a range of 14 notes. The range of
a complete set of drums covers
four octaves.
Last February, Rear Adm Dan-
iel V. Ggllery, commandant of the
10th Naval District here, visited
Trinidad at carnival time . He was
so taken by the music of the steel
drums he ordered a set. When the
drums were ready, he ordered the
Navy's band here to go to Trinidad
for a week and learn to play them
Even though many thought a
week would riot be ^enough, the
bovs did well. Upon their return,
they began"-appearing at Navy
