“WHERE ARE THE SNOWS OF YESTERYEAR?
c
There are a great many men here fn Orange, Doth in
and out of the Navy, who shed a tear, or so yesterday on
learning of the death of Admiral Marc Mitscher. He was
a guy the men of the Navy could love. And love-him they J ” *'' w h wT J<d<nBullV em

Only those closely associated with Admiral Mitscher
could fully appreciate the powpr of his personality—for
4 it was that personality which drove the men and ma-
chines he commanded to extraordinary achievements.
There is little need here to repeat the part Mitscher
and his men did ih bringing the war with Japan to an
early conclusion. Just after Pearl Harbor the Japanese
had a vary powerful navy. We had none at all. But thanks
to American productive genius and leaders like Admiral
Mitscher to see that the ships available were used in the
most effective -manner possible, the* tables soon were
filmed. When the war ended .we had a navy powerful
beyond imagination anjl the Japanese had none at all.
Admiral Mitscher was one of the few old Navy top
hands who saw early the value of aircraft in naval war-
fare. That’s why he drew commands of the best carrier
task forces. He knew exactly what to do with a combi-
nation of ships and planers the Japanese soon learned.

Mitscher was a plaPTSpoken man. He Wasn't too
concerned about hurting someone’s feeljngs. B»t some-
' how he suceeded in bringing out the best administrative
qualities of the officers on his staff and through them-the
best of everything from the men under his command.
Now he has passed on and in time the man will be-
come a legend. He was a man of miracles, but Admiral
Mitscher. as must all, came eventually to that time when
the Big Skipper signals for full speed ahead on that final
voyage into the Great Beyond. No one knows, of course,
just what the Admiral will encounter out there but if,
as some say. the final destination is peopled with winged

Si«m of the Time*
This mcinmoVrihosis is a sign of
our fast-moving times. It means
that empires have become anc-
chre nirms. They are breaking un.
and if their constituent units still

form of commonwealths compris-
ing sovereign states which de-
sire that arrangement. The British
Emoire already has traveled far
along thnti road.
Here we get a partial answer
to the question: What use *is a

Things To Be Done
Congress may decide to do sev
eral things to make air tTavel
safer. For example:
^ Pass new laws and spend a
good deal of government monev
for safety equipment, if the air-
lines can't afford It.
(Maybe It won’t want to spend
money tor that. All the talk .in
congress now is about cutting
down government expenses, not
adding to them.)
The kinder safety equipment
being talked about is this:
Radar and radio for landing,
equipment for dispersing fog a-
round airports, and better lights
around airports.
Coat Would Be High
How much would it cost? In
the millions. Senator Brewster,
Maine Republican, figures it would
cost. $900,000 to install at each
major airport.
Byt W. A. Patterson, preside111
of United Airlines, says it wou’d
make aig^ travel as safe as laud
.travel in three to five years.
< James M. Landis, chairman jf
the Civil Aeronautics board
(CAB), the government's big boss
of civilian flying, says it would
help tremendously.

ways. T
So he says congress should vote-^
to put up government mortey for ‘
such a safety program.

This biD, new before the Texas Legislature is a piece
of power-Moe legislation which, in plain language,
would give the manufacturer the uncontrolled power
to fix the prices at which you buy everything im-
portant to your home. It would prevent.your merchant
from offering special values below the fixed prices.
It is a law against bargains. Camouflaged as a honey-
titled “Fair Trade” ait, it permits northern and
eastern mamrff rtureri lo dictate the cost of our living

act, that would step your merchant from passing a
