Consider Flexibility of Rooms
Before Remodeling Your Home
I
If you are planning to build or
remodel your house, consider
“flexibility” of the various rooms,
suggests Mrs. Bertha Bryson, as-
sociate housing specialist with the
LSU Agricultural Extension Ser-
vice.
“Flexibility” in home design
means providing areas that might
serve more than one activity.
Folding doors, screens, and de-
mountable partitions will be used
more frequently in future homes
and there is a trend toward tha
elimination of interior load-bear-
iqg partitions to permit more flex-
ible planning.
“People today spend more for
tha better construction and main-
tenance of their homes,” she be-
lieves. “Insulation, heating, wir-
ing, appliances and cabinet work
are musts in today’s well-built
house. Because of these improve-
ments, small houses now cost as
much as larger one, did several
decades ago.
“The smaller the house, the
more complicated the assignment
of space for use becomes. An ex-
pensive house may have separate
rooms for guests, dining or study.
Business Building
J1 Is Being Remodejed
A complete remodeling and in-
' terior redecorating job is under
i way down town at 208 Sth SL, the
building which formerly was oc-
cupied by Williams Drug Store. ~
The renovation of the building
is being done by James T. Duncan
of Orange iwho plana to open a
credit clothing store here in Aug-
ust.
* Duncan, who is now‘handling a
credit clothing route in the Sabine
area, took out a $100 permit re-
cently to remodel the building.
Fixtures which were moved are
being replaced and walls are be-
ing aheetrocked.

In the small house, which cannot
afford this space, a plan which
calls for a few large areas is al-
ways better, more livable and
more adaptable to change than is
one with a number of small rooms.
“Good plans solve this problem
by making each room-area serve
as many activities as possible. A
plaint which does this is* always
said to have flexibility. This is
particularly , necessary in areas
where family group living is car-
ried on. New designs make multi-
use of service areas also. Well-
designed storage space and cabi-
net work play an important part
in providing flexibility,” she em-
phasizes.
foyer and coatroom. Rest rooms
and a small kitchen for serving
snacks also will be located on the
first floor.
Thp upstairs section includes
plans for a movie protector, and
two rooms which will be used
for storage and dub meetings.
Under a plan agreed upon by
both directors and the Du font
Co., Du Pont will furnish money
for the construction of {he build-
ing and DERA will be responsible
for equipping the structure with
furnishings and for the mainten-
ance and upkeep of the grounds.
A starting date for construction
has not been decided upon, since
it pdlljbe necessary to -obtain a
long term lease from property
ownerf. From previous • commit-
ments it is believed the lease can
be secured without undue delay.
Details of the lease are now be-
ing worked out by .the company
and property owners.
Considerable work also remains
on clearing of the land and build-
ing a road to the proposed site,
before construction can get under
way.
Volunteer workers presently
are clearing ground for the road
to the building site and men have
staked off the land for the club-
house. -
Crews already have put In two
full days on clearing work and
another work day is scheduled in
the near future.
