He wished to be Jusf like a New

how to act lie sought a countryman
of Ills, a wag, who had been a resi-

"I ll fool them." said the newcomer
confidently.

as stain as he reached the corner an
urchin looked up at him and cried;

"Catramba" he muttered. “Aren't
these New Yorkers clever?"
lie walked aloug, showing his face

and Important step in the movement
to secure a deep waterway from I.ake
Michigan to the Gulf of Mexico was
taken today when the opening to navi-
gation of the Illinois and Mississippi
canal, which has been completed after
thirty years of work. The importance
of the event was evidenced by the at-
tendance of Governor Deneen and
many other notables- at the opening
ceremonies.
The work of constructing the canal
which was formerly known as the Hen-
nepin canal, was commenced many
years ago. In 1890 congress appro-
priated money to carry on the work
and altogether the appropriations have
amounted to about $8,000,000.
•The main line of the canal, seventy-
five miles long extends from the Illi-
nois river, near Hennepin, to the Mis-
sissippi river three miles below ftofck
Island. The navigable feeder, about
thirty miles long, extends from Rock
river at this point to the main line
near Sheffield and is of the same gen
oral dimensions as the main line.
The canal Is fifty-two feet wide at
the bottom, eighty feet at the water
line and has a minimum depth of
seven feet. There are thirty-two
locks on the main line and one on tne
feeder. Water Is to lie forced down
the canal by a great dam. one-fourth

point.

MAIL ORDERS PROMPTLY ATTENDED TO
Some Mistakes In Hospitality.
Many young hosekeepers fail dis-
mally in entertaining because they at-
tempt too much. Nor is it always the
Inexperienced bride who sits In agony
while a scries of blunders spoils her
dinner party.
The greatest mistake a would-be
hostess can make Is to attempt dishes
which have never bpen served at ner
table before, unless, of course, she can
have a caterer or possesses an expe-
rienced cook upfln whom she knows tt
Is safe to depend.
Under ordinary circumstances a wo-
man should know beyond a doubt
what courses her cook cannot fail in
before she places them before the
guests. Also, if she -has any doubts
as to the ability of her servants in
remembering her orders for ser'dhg,
she had better write them down plain-
ly on a piece of paper, to be referred
to by the waitress If she becomes
flurried and forgets Instructions.
The woman who has not a mimho"
of efficient servants at her command
should oversee personally all the de-
tails of her proposed entertainment
Many women do this in any case un-
less they have a trusted housekeeper.
The ordering at the stores, the se-
lection of courses, the floral decora-
tions and finally the getting out of
the proper china and silver, all the
thousand and one details of the • im-
plest of entertainments should be
thoroughly settled in good time and
duly talked over with the maids so
that they will understand.
A woman who attempts to entertain
seml-occasionally will do well to have
her table appointments correct at all
meals, whether there be guests or not
By this means only can her servants
learn how she likes things and be-
come accustomed to the routine of
course dinners and dainty luncheon
set-outs.
It is pitifully apparent that the
waitress is not accustomed to “wait-
ing" when she loses her wits and hes-
itates as to which side of the guest
she must stand on when handing the
vegetables.

Diana Cholmondeley is the sister of
Mary -Cholmondeley and is a new
playwright. Every year her father.
Rev. R. H. Cholmondeley, nephew of
Bishop Heber, arranged a play for the
amusement of their Children and the
parish children. The subject matter
always was written by Miss Cholmon

carried out by her father. He con-
structed a sort of glorified doll’s house
about four feet high, arranged with all
the stage details, footlights, colored
lights and dolls In character coslumc

sisters became interested In arranging
these plays for the amusement of the
village children, latter they took part
In private theatricals, Her best role
was Crafer in “Liberty Hall," which
was given a few years ago at Klrt-

Episcopal palaces also took part—one
the son of the late bishop of Oxford,
the other son of the bishop of Ripon.
"A Man’s Foes" is Miss Cholraonde

the Imperial theater. The plot was
suggested by a newspaper paragraph,
the play was written in nine days and
accepted without alteration.

to develop a retentive memory. The
