B w ihe Flood S ffsr«r» Aid Will b» Dig-
it ibatid.
Oapt. Geo. B. Davis, commissary of
subsistence of the Ualced States army,
arrived In the olty yesterday to attend
to the distribution of the federal ap-
propriation for the El Paso flood suf-
ferers. Captain Davis had a confer-
ence with Mayor Magoffin yesterday
and they will meet egatn this morning
to agree upon a plan for affording re-
lief to the tliod sufferers. Oaptatn
Davis will nave his headquarters on
tbe third floor of the custom house.
A Times reporter asked Oaptatn
Davis If It oould be arranged so that
the money appropriated by the gov-
ernment for the relief of tbe flood saf-
ferers oould be given to only snob as
worked for It. Cap aln Davis replied
that such an arrangement onnid be
made and hints,If aud Mayor Magoffin
would bold a consultation this morn-
ing for the purpose of Bgreelcg on eome
each arrangement. The government
assistance will not be given out In cash,
but will be distributed In the shape of
rations and such supplies as are deem
ed necessary.
(Japataln Davis says be will pur
obese his groceries and supplies from
the merohantq of El Paso If they will
give him reasonsble prices. If tbe
flood sufferers will agree to work and
accept supplies as pay, the 110,000 ap-
propriated by tbe government would
go along ways towerd repairing the
streets damrgtd by the flood and in
Axing up the road through East El
Paso; and at the same time the mer-
chants would sell {10,000 worth of
goods for cash.
Yesterday Mayor Magoffin and Ooun
ty Judge Harper drew on the stete
treasurer, through the State National
bank, for (he 15.000 appropriated by
tbe state for tbe relief of the flood
sntferers. The draw was authorized
from Anslln and the money will be

The El Paso sports have been trying
to llgnr* out how It happened that
Maher did not thraeb ins man In his
recent go In New York with Sharkey
The New Y.oik Journal throws eouie
light on tbe subject and says that
Maher made no pretense at lighting
uutll the seventh round. Among
other things the Journal says:
"Prevlotn to the bout lusp*otor
McLaughlin went to the dressing rooms
of the boxers Bud warned them that
they would be arrested at ih* first slgti
of elngglDg. This, of course, was un-
pleasant news to Manager Bredy aud
Messrs. Lynoh aud Connolly, who look
after the Interests of the boiere.
"They realized that should the bout
be stopped In the Hrs’, second or third
round the people could with reason
demand the return ot their money.
Therefote, the managers had the al-
ternative of declaring the boat off, re
turning tbe money of patrons and
Bhonlderlng the Iosyas doe to the
heavy expenses, or tenuring the oo
operation of the fighters for the pur-
pose of lengthening the bout. Maher,
especially, was cautioned not to cot
loose for at least tlx rounds, after
which he wss at liberty to end the
contest as soon as be found It conven-
ient. Maher carried oat the Instruc-
tions to the latter, and his actions oon
vtnoed many onlookers that he was
afraid of Sharkey, or eUe he had for-
gotten how to fight. Sharkey appar-
ently had tha batter of tbe first bIi
rounds and was In high feather.
“In the seventh round a wonderful
ohang* came over Maher. Ileseemid
to have springs In his heels, and he
danoed threateningly about the aatons
l»h#d Sharkey. Maher feinted with
l'ghtnlug-like rapidity, and the sailor
became a-i confused as a fox between
the sea and a pack of hounds. Shark-
ey's guard was shifted oorivulslveiy In
hi* efforts to looate the center of the
Impending danger, but all to no avail,
Maher reached the sailor's jaw as
easily as he did O'Djunell’s, and
Sharkey dropped like a leg.
“It Is highly probable that, had the
men gou* to i hair corner at the sound
of tbe gong, the polloe would not have
interfered, as no notice was taken of
the accidental tumble by Maher In the
fifth. However, Sharksy’s roanlnoal
oonduo’ settled the matter and the
bout came to a close.
The manegera retained the gate re
oelpts, the boxers got their sheres of
the parse, and the only grumblers are
the gentleman who bought 15 and *10
tickets In tha fond expectation of see-
ing a flnlth tight.”
