When tucked or elaborated with
hand stitclu-ry, the pale colors and
white are charmingly dainty. The
bright Scotch plaids and the finely
striped mohairs suggest the most
stylish school frocks, especially when
relieved by bands of plain fabric.
Hut for all arouud service no ma-
terial is better adapted to stand the
wear and tear t hut school clothes are
subjected lo than serge. It has come
hack into favor again this season, and
some smart little garments are fash-
ioned In II. both coats and dresses.
White serge or cheviot is in high
favor for coats, and there are also
some very attractive shades of dark
blue and red.
A jacket of heavy blue serge might
have a lining of red and a collar of a
darker shade of velvet. White serge
would also lie chic with collar of red
velvet or cloth, relieved with black
soutache braid.
The tiny lots now wear white pique
dresses the year round. There are
most attractive designs by which they
may bo made
The liox-plealed modes, hanging
straight from the shoulder, the neck
completed by a broad sailor collar, are
among the prettiest and smartest.
Very simple and effective is tlu: smart,

A bit of hand work always gives a
terial, and it comes in such dainty,
pretty colorings.
Tills, too. may be further elaborated
by buttonholed scallops if the mother
has the time and Caros to take extra
trouble.
Very charming, indeed, are the little
maids in their clean, freshly starched
white aprons.
These dainty white aprons have been
banished for a time, but are now mak-
ing lheir appearance again among the
well-kept children.
They certainly add greatly to the
neat, attractive appearance of the
child, as well as protecting the little
frock from soil.
Secretary Taft's Smile.
Secretary Taft's travels represent
no polity of encroachment mi aggrand-
isement at the expense of weaker
races. The war minister, who Is also
a circumnavigator, is engaged only In
friendly missions, and his benevolent
smile is not one of the superficial
sort.—St. Louis Globe-Democrat.
A beautiful Celtic cross, twenty feet
high, has been erected at Rarigihoua,
Bay of Islands, where ninety-three
years ago Samuel Marsden, the “Apos-
tle of New Zealand," landed to hold
