Unusual Window-Cleaning.
John S. Cox, speaker of the Tennes-
see senate had an old negro servant
who liked his drink just as well as the
best Kentucky colonel in the Blue-
grass state. One morning, just after
the cold Bpell broke, the darky came
to Senator Cox.
“Marse John,” said he, “I'll jes' up
an’ clean dose winders dis mornin’.”
“All right, Caesar," replied the sen-
ator.
‘T's got ter hab a half tumbler of
whisky. Mars John. D’re ain't nuffln
like whisky for cleanin’ winders.”
The half tumbler was promptly giv-
en Ceasar. who armed himself with
some rags and carried the whisky to
another room to begin work. A few
minutes afterward Senator Cox had
occasion to enter his room. Caesar
was busy polishing the windows. The
tumbler was on the table, but no whis-
ky in it.
“Why, Caesar, what's become of the
whisky?" asked khe senator. “I thought
you used it in this work.”
"So I does. Marse John; so I does,"
was the answer. “Ye see, sah, I drinks
de whisky an' blows my bref agin de
winders!"—Judge's Library.
Had Reason to Cheer.
Years ago when the G. A. R. annual
department encampment was held in
Boston, as the veterans were march-
j ing along one of the avenues a lady,
who had secured an elevated position
on a wagon in a side street, became
conspicuous hy the enthusiasm she
displayed, and was dissatisfied with
the lack of It in the bystanders,
"Cheer!" said she “Why don’t you
cheer? I guess you'd cheer if you'd
lost two husbands in the war, as I
did."—Detroit News.
