THE SOUTHERN ASSEMBLY
Denver, .May 24.—Rev. K A. Hutch-
inson of Altoona, Pa., was elected
corresponding secretary of the board
of home missions by the general as-
sembly of the United Presbyterian
church this afternoon There were
20 nominations tor the office and Dr.
Hutchinson was elected on the sec-on,,
ballot. The light over this office was
the most hotly contested of the as-
sembly.
Rev. J. c. Scouiter 01 Philadelphia,
was elected secretary of the board of
ministerial relief by unanimous vote.
A number of impressive addresses
were made during the sessions today.
In commenting ou the report of evan-
gelistic work, which was read today.
President Russell, of Westminster
rniversity, West Wilmington, Pa., de-
clared that what the church of the
present day needs is revival with it
capital "H." He also declared that to
be successful the evangelical work
must, of necessity be taken up along
the lines of the existence of “a heav-
en and a hell," and that a person who
wished to escape must accept the gos-
pel.
Tonight the session was devoted (o
memorial services in remembrance of
those ministers who have passed
away
Tomorrow there will he no session
of the general assembly as the mem-
bers will take n trip over the Moffat!
road.
The Columbus Assembly.
Columbus, May 21.—The llhth gen-
i nil assembly of the Presbyterian
church concluded its work today
crowding Into the two last sessions a
vast amount of routine business
much of which was of great import-
ance. There was no renewal, as had
bun expected, of the temperance con-
troversy. On the contrary, the report
of the- permanent committee on tem-
perance was accepted without a dis-
senting vote.
The assembly decided to meet next
year in Kansas City.
The assembly established the col-
ored synod of Canadian in Oklahoma,
it being represented that the negro
membe rs of the church in that section
were denied a we pa rate-organisation.
Tlie committee on church policy ruled
with regard to territory where differ-
ences of race or language make se-ji-
aration de sirable, that wheti a petition
for a separate presbytery is presented
tlie same shall he- granted and It shall
not lie necessary to secure- the eon-
sent of other members of the church
in the same territory.
The finaucial committee re-ported
that during the past year $4,609,852
bad been received for the- use of the
various boards.
Tlie committee on necrology re-
ported tlml during the year leit min-
isters eef the- church had died.
The re port of tlie committe-e on nar-
rative deplored the increasing elt se-
rration of the Sabbath, a laxity in
tlie observance of the work of the
week of prayer, the growing restless-
ness in the pulpit and consequent
shortening of the- terms of pastorates
and an increasing concern over the
use of untrained laymen in eluiics
which properly belonged to ministers,
declaring that danger lurks in the
practice of calling men direct from
the pew to the pulpit. A message- of
greeting was received from the t'nited
Presbyterian assembly, in session’ Ht
Denver, in which the hopo was ex-
pressed that the bonds between the
two churches would be strengthened.
