hia shortage ia far greater than wan
first thought. The ahortage in the
lease distr-ct fnnd alone is over $10#,-
00ft. The treasurer of the United States
turned over to him $1,546,000 allotment
money. '1 lit- ^^/ere 18,749 Choctaws
registered to >f^tw $lo8 per capita. Out
of this number something like 60 failed
to draw. If they had all drawn it
would have taken $1,416,147 to pay
them, leaving a balance of $189,468. TO,
this he had a credit of $24,797, but it
will take about $5000 from it to pay ths
balance of claims that ars registered.
Out of tnis mnd there is $104,727 unao-
coanted for. No one knows how he
stands in the general fund as the
committee has not yet examined ths
books.
Some of his political friends are try-
ing to explain the matter, and ask that
public opinion be not expressed until
farther investigation. The Locke men
are loud in denouncing him, and a
number of the Jones men also denounced
him. His bond is only $30,000. His
shortage will reach $550,000.
Green McCnrtain is a college bred
full blood Choctaw, weighing fully 300
pounds, and was very popular with the
commercial travelers.

Topeka, Oct. 11.—At Norton, Walter
Connors made a murderous assault on
his business partner, Eugene Kennedy.
He struck him three times with a
hatchet, inflicting fatal wounds on the
head. Connors afterward attempted
suicide by cutting a fearful gash across
his throat with a choese knife. He is
supposed to be insane. The firm of
Connors & Kennedy is the largest gen-

northwestern Kansas. Both men are
well known and highly respected.
Car of Powder Kxpi6,lea.
Massillon, O., Oct. 11.—A car load
of powder exploded on the Pittsburg,
Fort Wayne and Chicago railroad north
of Lawrence Monday night. Buildings
trembled hen, seven miles away, like
an earthquake. Twenty box cars were
blown to pieces, track and ties torn up
for a hundred yards and a railroad
bridge destroyed. The engineer, fire-
man and a brakeman were badly burned
and two others injured. All telegraph
wires are down.
How QuiriTun Hears Defeat.
N*w York, Oct. 11.—Lord Dunraven
bears the defeat of his boat like an eld
time sportsman. While admitting Vig
ilant is the faster of the two yachts he
said that the race was greatly ham
pered by excursion boats. Valkyrie’a
decks were frequently under water
from wheels of passing steamers. He
thinks the Valkyrie will win the com
ing race, but thinks there is little pros-
pects of winning the cup.

was a starter. The First National bank
came next with $1000. Then the City
