parently trivial in itself has arous-
~exas | ej sucjj pU^jic. indignation that a
call has been issued for a mass
meeting to denounce the proceed-
ings of something entirely beyond
the pale of civilization. A pretty
young German girl by the name of
Rosa Schmidt was a few mofiths
ago convicted in the courts of for-
gery and sentenced to two years in
the penitentiary. The girl, it is be-
lieved, never realized that she was
attempting to prevaricate a crime
when she presented the check for a
small amount at a local bank for
payment with the name of her em-
ployer signed to it, hut the opinion
is that she was inspired by some
man to attempt to get the money
by fraud. She was seventeen
years old and perhaps never saw a
check before. Petitions for pardon
with the names of the District At-
torney, the trial judge, Sheriff, De-
tectives and the jury who convict-
ed her were sent to Governor Ross,
to which he paid no heed. Yester-
terday a penitentiary contractor
came to the city to convey a nuni-
of convicts to the state penal insti-
tution. Rosa Schmidt was among
the number and the contractor
marched the pretty young girl of
tender age through the streets
to the Missouri Pacific depot chain-
ed by the neck to a big hurley ne-
gro criminal. Public excitement
over the episode runs very high,
and it is expected that a rousing
indignation meeting will he held.

construction of a bridge across the

people will of course oppose the
building of this bridge, as they
have projected bridges at Memphis

position, if effective at all, can not
be so long.
