made Sound by partial recon-
struction, says American Builder
magazine. As an example of suc-
cessful remodeling, the publica-
tion explains how an unused old
barn was put into as-good-as-new
condition.
Work started with the removal
of all doors and windows. The
(■oof was jacked up and reinforced
with new rafters, fteroofing with
asphalt shingles was accomplished
without removing the old roofing
material. All ola split or loose

months for this is the season of,
along the shingle butts to provide
a smooth surface for application
of the new material.
This method of rerooflng elimi-
nates the expense of tearing the
old shingles off. Nails used in ap-
plying the new asphalt roofing
must be long enough to penetrate
the old roof TOyering anc^ijfraft
derneath.
The first step in reconditioning
the sidewalls of the barn' was to
cut away the bbttom three feet <tl
the siding, Which was badfy
rotted. A new nailing strip was
placed between the posts. The
lower edge of the old siding was
nailed to this strip.
Decayed sills were removed.
New concrete foundation sections
were poured, and new sills were
put in place after the concrete
had set
The bottom three feet of the
walls was covered with corru-
gated asbestos sheets. The upper
part of the walls was covered
with asphalt felt, and asbestos
siding was placed over that.
During work on the exterior,
new windows and doors were cut
and framed. Floors were repaired
and the interior layout was re-
arranged for greater efficiency.
