Student Leadership program in association with the Keep Stephenville Beautiful Initiative hosted its 13th annual
Tarleton Round-Up on Saturday, March 12. Formerly called "The Big Event", this day of charity is shared by other colleges as
well. "We changed it to Tarleton Round-Up because we wanted to set ourselves apart from others," said director of student
leadership programs, Johnny Robinson. Started in 1998 by as a Student Leadership service project, it has since expanded to
a campus wide event.
Tarleton students met at the stadium at 8:30 a.m. to get name tags and to be assigned to a team. The main goal of
the day is to assist those who need it the most. "Typically each year we put an ad in the paper for our elderly residents of
Stephenville and those who cannot complete the basic household projects we take for granted," Robinson said. Students
were notified about Tarleton Round-Up via e-mail and Facebook. All in all, around 250 volunteers attended to help out.
Though many of the volunteers were part of a Greek organization or other campus organizations, many were there just to
help out.
In 2010 Tarleton had around 75 projects. This year however, the number dropped to around 50. These projects
included raking leaves, cleaning gutters, and cleaning brush from yards.
"We never leave our projects unfinished," Robinson said. When one job was finished, the members of that group
would be assigned to help another group with their projects.
To help with expenses donations were made by the community. IESI, a waste management company, donated two
large dumpsters for the day. "The cost isn't as extensive as it has in years past thanks to donations from local businesses."
At the end of the day, all of the volunteers were treated to lunch at Heritage Park. "[Tarleton Round-Up] has grown
by leaps and bounds in the last 13 years," Robinson said.

"It's a good day of service to the Stephenville community and it's always great as an institution to give back."

On Thursday, March 31 Tarleton and the surrounding community filled the field at Tarleton Memorial Stadium
with donated items for local charities.
Starting at 8 a.m., participants and over 100 volunteers began donating, collecting and organizing the constant
incoming flow of non-perishable items that were later donated to 17 different local charities, pantries and social service
groups. "I am so proud of the event and all those who participated," Student Body President Alycia Pruitt said.
A total of over 200 boxes filled with more than 13,000 canned goods and dry items, 197 cases of water, 103 boxes
of toiletries, and four 16-foot trailer loads of clothing were collected, as well as $704 in monetary donations.
All donations were used to provide aid to primarily local charities and support agencies. "Fill the Field really gave
us the chance to make a difference and help our community," Pruitt said.
The First United Methodist Church in Morgan Mill used their portion of donations to open the doors of their food
pantry. Additionally, proceeds from Fill the Field jump-started an after school program through the New Life Housing
Foundation.
The donations came from 127 different groups, businesses and organizations. Representatives from West Texas
A&M and Texas A&M - San Antonio traveled to Stephenville as well to make their own contributions, and show their
support of Tarleton.
The Student Government Association facilitated the event in conjunction with the Tarleton Athletics department.
