Thursday, Feb. 17 Jazz Ensembles I and II performed
their first concert of the new semester in the Clyde H. Wells Fine
Arts Center. Before the concert, there was a small band playing in
the hall of the Fine Arts Center as entertainment for the waiting
guests. Coffee and deserts were served.
The show was kicked off by Jazz Ensemble II directed
by Dr. Cara Pollard. One familiar piece they performed was "Li'l
Darlin'" by the American jazz great, Neal Hefti. This slow, soulful
performance was quite enjoyable, and the solo by Cody Sergeant
was spot on. Another well done song was "Sweet Georgia Brown"
by Ben Bernie, Maceo Pirikard, and Kenneth Casey. This upbeat
swinging song was a pleasure to listen to. The jazz ensemble
seemed a little out of practice, for the most part due to the ice,
but the show was well received.
The second half of the show was the Jazz Ensemble
I directed by Greg Ball, and they put on a great show. They
began their performance with the song "Day In, Day Out" by
Rube Bloom, a very smooth tune broken with occasional horns.
Then they played "The Second Time Around" by Jimmy Van
Heusen and Sammy Cahn. The group began playing with it's five
saxophonists standing at the forefront of the ensemble, which
added a little pop to the performance.
My favorite piece of the night was the "Overture to the
Royal Mongolian Suma Foosball Festival" by Lyle Mays. With
it's quick upbeat tempo and snappy drum line, this piece was
easily the most fun to listen to. It included a fun break in which
saxophonists Jacob Wright and Jordan Grelle shared a solo that
broke the regular rhythm, but seemed to fit in great. The jazz
ensemble really seemed to get into the song, which made it more
visually appealing, and Greg Ball directed them with gusto.
The show was a great opportunity to listen to some
great jazz, and see an entertaining show. Tarleton will hold
another Jazz Concert on March 26, so do not miss this chance to
see another great show!

SPORTS INFORMATION
The Tarleton women's basketball team hosted Abilene
Christian Wednesday night in their final home game of the
regular season and rewarded the seniors with a 65-48 victory.
It was senior night for three of the TexAnns with guard Sonya
Sundberg, forward Brittnie Haley, and center Kelsey Benford
being recognized prior to tip-off for their accomplishments and
contributions to Tarleton over the past four years.
The TexAnns set the pace of the game early with an
up-tempo style of offense that caught the Wildcats off guard.
Tarleton jumped out to an early 8-2 lead by the 18:10 mark
behind a pair of lay ups by Haley and baskets from Tara Towns
and Benford.
From there, defense began to settle in somewhat, but it was still
a very fast paced game for both teams.
Tarleton had a couple of five-point runs to continue to separate
themselves from ACU in the first half. Unlike the Wildcats, the
TexAnns scored in bunches. ACU had a 3:39 scoring drought
which really put Wildcats in a hole on the road.
By the 9:31 mark, Tarleton had already built a 24-10
lead after consecutive buckets by Morgan Stehling.
As time ticked away off the clock, the TexAnns enjoyed
their double-digit lead, but ACU refused to give up with a five-
point run of their own over a 2:49 stretch.
Over the finals 6:30 of the first half, Tarleton got four
clutch free throws by Shelby Adamson, a three by Brianna
Bledsoe, and a basket by Morgan Stehling to go into the locker
room with a 33-21 advantage.
In the first half, the TexAnns shot only 30.6 percent from
the floor, but hit 10 free throws. They also held the Wildcats to a
26.9 percentage from the field and out-rebounded them 28-17.
Haley had eight points and five boards to lead the way
for Tarleton, while Adamson added seven points, six rebounds,
three assists and two steals. Stehling chipped in five points, with
Wright and Benford adding five and six rebounds respectively.
