^Experts give advice on
tanning, cancer, sunburns
f Now that spring is here and summer nears, it’s time to shake the cobwebs off the oldl
swimsuit and tan your hide. But before you become a bronze beauty or beau, you should
learn the facts about skin cancer and the effects of excessive tanning.
Each year over 500,000 new cases of skin cancer are reported. It is one of the most
common forms of human cancer and the most curable forms when detected early.
Ninety percent of skin cancers are found on the parts of the body that are not
covered by clothing.
"To prevent skin cancer and dangerous sun burns wear long sleeve shirts, wide
brimmed hats and protective clothing." Dr. Keith Keeling said.
Because of the growing trend in sun bathing during the last 59 years, more cancers
have been found on the backs and chest of men and the legs of women.
People with red or blonde hair and fair skin are more prone to develop skin cancer
than those with deep brown or black skin. But everyone’s chance of developing the
disease increases as they spend more time in the sun.
"Light-haired, fair-skinned people need to be extra cautious when tanning,"
Pharmacist Jim Cox said. "By limiting exposure to the sun and using a sun screen with a
SPF factor suitable to their skin they should be able to prevent a serious sunburn."
If you do spend too much time out in the sun and get a serious sunburn, you should
apply at topical anesthetic (like Bactine) to your burn. This will help relieve the pain a
(serious burn can cause.
jL "When you get a sunburn, you need to treat it like any other burn because it is aj
1L thermal injury," Keeling said. "Cool packs and aspirin can be used to ease the'J
pain and help with the infection. If the bum is blistering it is classified jk
as a second degree bum and needs medical attention."
Although the risk of cancer and severe skin damage is
Ku known, many people choose to ignore the warnings
