IT'S MORE THAN A LIFELESS ARCHIVES
It was on this date 200 years ago that the convention which had
assembled to draft the Constitution of the United States of America
concluded its deliberations. That Convention had begun its work in late
may. The summer had been hot and the debate at times rancorous. And
now the motion was made for adding the last formula, "Done in
convention by the unanimous consent," etc., which was agreed to and
added accordingly. The deed had been done. The compromises had been
made. And now it was up to the people in the various states to approve
of this constitution in ratifying conventions held for that purpose. The
people did so ratify and the government of the United States of America
was reborn.
The drafters of the Constitution knew what kind of government they
had created. That is, they knew that this government was a grand
experiment such as had not been tried by others. The framers explicitly1
