"THIS NATION - HAS MAN'S FIRST CHANCE TO BUILD - A PLACE
WHERE THE MEANING OF MAN'S LIFE MATCHES THE MARVEL OF MAN'S
LABOR."
LYNDON JOHNSON WAS ABLE TO EMBODY THE HOPE OF AMERICA IN
THOSE TIMELY WORDS. BUT THE NATION SUFFERS, WORKING MEN AND
WOMEN SUFFER FOR LACK OF ECONOMIC SECURITY, FOR LACK OF JOBS,
FOR LACK OF CONFIDENCE. IF WE CAN RESTORE THAT CONFIDENCE,
IF WE CAN PROVIDE THE JOBS -- THEN MAYBE WE CAN CONTINUE TO
BUILD A NATION WHERE THE QUALITY OF LIFE, WHERE HUMAN KINDNESS
AND NEED, WHERE FREEDOM AND DIGNITY, ARE ONCE AGAIN THE UNDER-
PINNINGS OF THE HOUSE OF AMERICA.
THERE ARE MEN AND WOMEN WILLING AND ABLE TO ENLIST IN THE
EFFORT TO CONSTRUCT A BETTER SOCIETY. THE HOUSTON APPRENTICE
OUTREACH PROGRAM OPENS DOORS FOR THOSE WHO NEED THE SKILLS TO
WORK, NOW IT MUST BE THE TASK OF THE CONGRESS, OF YOUR ELECTED
REPRESENTATIVES TO OPEN DOORS OF OPPORTUNITY, TO PROVIDE JOBS.
TWELVE YEARS AGO THE LARGEST SINGLE DEMONSTRATION IN THE
HISTORYOF THESE UNITED STATES OCCURRED IN THE NATION'S CAPITOL
WHEN OVER 200,000 AMERICANS OF ALL RACES, COLORS, AND CREEDS
GATHERED BEFORE THE LINCOLN MEMORIAL, UNITED AND INSPIRED BY
THAT HUNGER FOR JUSTICE WHICH FOUND ITS MOST ELOQUENT EXPRESSION
IN THE LEADERSHIP OF DR. MARTIN LUTHER KING. TODAY, EIGHT YEARS
AFTER DR. KING'S TRAGIC DEATH, WE AS A NATION ARE CONFRONTED BY
