7 girls powerlifters
advance to state
Seven Cherokee County girls
powerlifters advanced to the
state meet by virtue oftheir per-
formances at the regional meets
in Canton this past weekend.
At the Region 3, Division II
regional meet, two Rusk Lady
Eagles advanced to state.
Ashley George advanced in
the 97-lb weight class after fin-
ishing fifth, while Kyhe Delaney
qualified in the 181-lb weight
class, finishing third.
Other lifters who advanced to
regionals for the Lady Eagles
were Jayme Harris (sixth, 132
lbs), Cassie Tankersley (10th,
148 lbs), Tiffany Harris (fifth,
198 lbs) and Hailey Stanford
(ninth, 220 lbs).
Advancing to regionals from
Bullard was Taylor Spiller, who
finished ninth in the 132-pound
weight class.
The Region 3, Division III 2A
meet advanced four Troup Lady
Tigers to the state meet.
Savannah Martin finished
first in the 97-lb weight class,
Ariel Hartless finished fifth in
the 132-lb weight class, Dean-
drea Jiles placed first in the
148-lb class and Kristin Dean
advanced after finishing third
in the 198-lb class.
Other lifters advancing to
regionals for Troup were Marlee
Ward (seventh, 123 lbs), Taylor
Martin (eighth, 132 lbs) and
Gabby Sewell (third, 181 lbs).
McKenzie Morton will repre-
sent Jacksonville at the state
meet after finishing second in
the 97-lb weight class at the
Region 3, Division I 4A meet.
Other lifters advancing to re-
gionals for the Fightin’ Maidens
were Fallon Dowling (eighth,
114 lbs), MakaylaMack (eighth,
148 lbs) and Tiyona Brown
(fourth, 220 lbs).
The girls’ state meet will be
March 17 in Corpus Christi.
The 4A Region 3, Division I
boys regionalpowerlifting meet
also took place this weekend in
Lindale, but no Jacksonville
athletes advanced to state.
Representing Jacksonville at
the regional meet were Austin
Gipson (sixth, 181 lbs), Javon
Johnson (198 lbs) and Chase
Palmer (fifth, 220 lbs).
Collins starts 2nd season at
Texas-Arlington
Rusk native Callie Collins
is hoping for another strong
season in her sophomore year
at the University of Texas-
Arlington.
The Mavs’ sophomore pitcher
is 5-4 on the season thus far,
picking up wins over Bingham-
ton (6-2), Belmont (9-4), Wichita
State (6-1), Texas Southern
(9-0) and Arkansas-Pine Bluff
(2-0).
Collins’ four losses came to
Texas Tech (7-1), Binghamton
(6-3), Baylor (11-0) and Drake
(3-2).
For the year, Collins has
pitched eight complete games
and notched a save, striking
out 40 batters and walking 27
with an earned run average of
3.25 in 56 innings.
The Mavericks begin confer-
ence play at home this weekend
as they meet Nicholls State.
Rusk, J’ville runners at Chapel
Hill track meet
Rusk and Jacksonville took
part in the Bulldog Relays at
Chapel Hill last Friday.
The Eagle boys finished third
behind Palestine and Chapel
Hill. Jacksonville finished sixth
in the event.

at Golden Gloves
Nine East Texas boxers trav-
eled to the Texas State Golden
Gloves Boxing Tournament in
Fort Worth last week, with one
bringing home a title.
Alex Martinez (Longview,
114 lbs), Oscar Morales (Na-
cogdoches, 123 lbs), Kenneth
Taylor (Tyler, 132 lbs.), Jer-
rion Campbell (Jacksonville,
141 lbs), Jose Perales (Mount
Pleasant, 152 lbs), Jeremy But-
ler (Kilgore, 178 lbs), Anthony
Fields (Flint, 165 lbs), Shamar-
ian Snider (Tyler, 201 lbs) and
Abraham Ligon (Tyler, 201+
lbs) all advanced in the hopes
of reaching the Golden Gloves
National Tournament.
On day one of the tournament,
Martinez fell to John Herrera
of Corpus Christi by decision;
Butler lost to Greg Solieau of
Houston by decision and Snider
won over Ryan Reynolds of
Houston by decision.
On day two, Morales lost to
Houston’s Frankie Agnew by
third-round stoppage; Taylor
lost to Gabriel Rodriguez of El
Paso by decision; Campbell lost
to Steve Belmontes of Corpus
Christi by sp fit decision; Perales
lost to R.G. Garcia of Corpus
Christi by spht decision and
Ligon fell to Robert Gutier-
rez of Corpus Christi by spht
decision.
On night three, Snider, East
Texas’ final boxer, won an easy
semifinal decision over Alexan-
der Espinoza of San Antonio.
On the final night, Snider took
on Alejandro Bermudez of Fort
Worth, picking up the win by
unanimous decision.
It was Snider’s second con-
secutive year to reach the finals,
and his first victory.
“He never ran out of gas, so
I had to snap my jab back and
dance,” Snider said.
Snider now advances to the
National Gold Gloves Tourna-
ment in Mesquite, Nev. April
30-May 5.
7 Indians, Maidens honored
by District 14-4A
The Jacksonville Fightin’
Indians and Fightin’ Maidens
made their mark on this year’s
14-4A all-district basketball
team. Five Indians, two Maid-
ens and a coach were honored
on this year’s squad.
On the girls’ side, named
to the first team was junior
Chancii Scott. Making the sec-
ond team was junior Sametria
“Pooh” Baker.
Making the first team for
the boys were senior Darius
Clater and juniors Dadrian
F ranklin and Londedric Taylor.
Clater and Franklin were both
unanimous choices. Named to
the second team were junior
Kedarrius Buckingham and
sophomore Raybon Riden.
Fightin’ Indian head coach
Brent Kelley was named co-
coach of the year, sharing the
award with Jeff Coleman of
Kilgore. Coach Kelley led the
Indians to a co-district cham-
pionship, while Coach Coleman
led the Bulldogs from last place
a season ago to the second round
of the playoffs.
The Indians finished 24-9,
while the Maidens finished
18-15.
14U Lady Jackets 2nd at
Lufkin tournament
The next generation of Alto
Lady Jacket softballplayers hit
the diamond this past Saturday
for the USFA March Madness
Tournament at Lufkin’s Kit
McConnico Park.
The 14ULady Jacketsplayed
six games, finishing 4-2.
The Alto squad advanced to
the final, but fell to East Texas
Fury ‘98, 8-7, in a barnburner
that lasted until midnight.
The team is coached by Jason
Duplichain, Rodney Thacker
and Johnnie Miller.
Team members are Pamela
Arroyo, Laney Black, Alliyah
Bruton, Kalyn Chan, Madison
Crisp, Alyssa Duphchain, Kyn-
zie Germany, Rachel Miller,
Alexa Russo, Vanessa Salgado,
Kaitlyn Staines and Hanna
Watson.
