After a delay of several weeks
due to questions of the fairness
of the decennial drawing of
electoral districts by the Texas
Legislature, the primary election
is now over.
However, the delay of the elec-
tion did not change two things.
It is still an expensive exercise
by the candidates to get elected,
and there are still people willing
to spend a lot of money to have
their candidates win.
Campaign finance reports from
period ending Dec. 31, 2011,
through the latest reporting
period of May 19 by the three
candidates for state represen-
tative District 11 to the Texas
Ethics Commission showed
that incumbent Chuck Hopson
received political contributions of
$365,820.46 and listed expenses
of $271,067.04.
Challenger Travis Clardy of
Nacogdoches raised $126,831.68
and reported expenditures of
$196,249.12. Mr. Clardy made
personal loans to his campaign
of $45,000. Tony Sevilla of Alto
showed total political contribu-
tions of $815 and expenses of
$6,223.65.

Unemployment rate declines
By Quinten Boyd
Staff Writer
As summer nears in Texas,
the temperatures are rising,
but unemployment rates are
falling - fast.
The state unemployment rate
continues to fall, and Cherokee
County and surrounding areas
are noticing a similar trend over
the past few months.
The state rate fell to 6.9, down
from 7.0 percent in March and
from 8.0 percent in April 2011,
marking the eighth consecu-
tive month the state rate has
decreased.
“With more than 12.5 million
workers and job seekers, Texas’
labor force is at an all-time
high,” said TWC Commissioner
Ronny Congleton. “I am encour-
aged that our steadily improv-
ing labor market continues to
offer good prospects for these
hard-working Texans.”
Cherokee County’s unem-
ployment rate in April was 7.2
percent, down 0.6 percent from
the March rate of 7.8.
The largest unemployment
decrease in the area was
in Houston County, which
dropped 0.9 percent, from 9.8
to 8.9 percent. Nacogdoches
County has the lowest rate in
