Parting the page
During my year as Editor-In-Chief of the J-TAC,
now JTAC News, there have been major changes
to this fine Tarleton tradition. The print edition
returned, albeit on a less
frequent basis and in a
tabloid format, allowing it
to focus on features with
a longer shelf life, while myjtac.com, soon to be
jtacnews.com (no need to update your bookmarks
the old address will still work), became the source
for Tarleton news.
I was blessed with a fantastic staff, full of talented
writers, reporters, photographers and graphic
designers. I also received great support from Caleb
Chapman, Director of Student Publications and
our office administrator Deloris Homer who will
be retired by the time this sees print (We’ll miss you
Deloris!). I was glad to have everyone in my corner;
this is certainly something I could not have done
alone.
I began working at the J-TAC as a cartoonist and
graphic designer, and rose through the organization
by continually learning new skills. While I won’t be working for JTAC News
you’ll probably continue to see me contribute comics until I graduate.
I’m passing the torch to John McGee who served diligently as my managing
editor during the spring and summer of 2012. While
my managing editor for the fall, Clifford Jones
and I will be moving to a new division of Student
Publications, Darkroom Productions, focusing on
video work for Tarleton.
I’ve gained so much experience in this job in so
many areas, and I hope to carry these experiences
with me into the future wherever it takes me
(hopefully a future with flying cars).
I’ll strangely miss the late nights working on the
print edition and the often chaotic work meetings.
While I’m saddened to no longer be working for
JTAC News, I’m glad I’ll be nearby for a while, and
can finally sit back and read the news without having
to scour every line for errors. I look forward to the
continued evolution of a news organization that has
shaped me more than I could ever hope to shape it.

With a new year, comes new news
I started working at the J-TAC two years
ago as a copy editor and have witnessed it change
into something more than I could have imagined.
When I began, weekly publications were the norm.
With a skeleton crew, it was occasionally an ardu-
ous task, but we always pulled it off and brought
important news to the student body.
As time passed, we transitioned to a strictly
online format, which I was initially against. I
began to warm to the idea, however, when I
realized that it was a more expeditious manner
to bring stories to the students. We also began
to bolster our roster at this point expanding the
J-TAC family with many bright young students
that became not only coworkers but also friends.
We have worked hard together to continue
bringing students pertinent news to their daily
lives, and brought the print edition back that
has seen tremendous support in addition to the
website.
The efforts of the J-TAC’s own Clifford Jones
have even spawned a video production service
within the Department of Student Publications,
called Darkroom Productions. I greatly look
forward to working together with Darkroom
Productions, as they begin their endeavor.

I would like to thank Kenneth Brisendine for
being an excellent example of an innovative
Editor-In-Chief that I hope to be as well as for
being a great mentor. I would like to thank Clifford
Jones for his tireless dedication to the J-TAC by
ensuring that photos and video were available for
all the important Tarleton events and for being
a good friend despite our occasional differences.
I would also like to thank Caleb Chapman and
Deloris Homer for being very supportive of the
J-TAC and dealing with our shenanigans.
As Editor-In-Chief, I intend to enact some
changes with JTAC News to ensure that the news
is published in as expediently a manner as possible,
while maintaining the quality of stories, photos
and videos that the students have come to expect
from us. I look forward to the coming semester
and continuing a tradition that has endured at
Tarleton for 94 years.
