Jordan Addresses Bethel
"FREEDOM TO Amer-
icans is not an abstraction.
Democracy suits us well."
Then, ending the ad-
dress on the note on which
she began, Miss Jordan
asked, "The Bicentennial,
the 200th birthday, two
centuries of life, freedom,
independence, Madison,
Jefferon . .. do you feel like
celebrating? I do."
Following Miss Jordan's
remarks, Odom was
installed as president by
Dr. Fred Bryson, chairman
of the Bethel College Board
of Trustees. Presenting
Odom with symbols of his
tenure in office were Dr.
Roy Blakeburn, moderator
of the Cumberland Presby-
terian Church, William
Dobbins, president of the
student government as-
sociation, Dr. L. C. Waddle,
faculty representative, and
Bryson.
Other guests on the plat-
form included U.S. Rep. Ed
Jones, who introduced
Miss Jordan, Dr. Raymon
Burroughs, academic dean,
Mrs. Elizabeth Aden,
alumni president, and the
Rev. Stanley Wood, Second
Cumberland Presbyterian
Church.
In a brief address, Odom
called on the college's
friends, students and fcul-
ty to "do our work forBethel College in the con-
text of Bethel's mission
and heritage; but certain-
ly, we must avoid any brit-
tle or lifeless interpreta-
tion of that mission."
"THE PRESIDENT can
admonish that Bethel Col-
lege not try to be all things
to all people, but that it do
well each program or ac-
tivity it undertakes,"
Odom continued. "And yet,
it is mainly in the choices
made by the faculty and
other administrators that
this desire will be realized
or not."
"I urge members of this
audience to work with me
to keep Bethel College
strong and vital," Odom
said. "However, there will
be no success for you the
trustees or you the alumni
or you the faculty or you
Cumberland Presbyterians
or you friends - except
through those of you who
are students of Bethel
College."
"Only your academic
achievement and your per-
sonal growth and your im-
pact upon American socie-
ty will demonstrate in the
final analysis, whether or
not Bethel College is a suc-
cess or failure."
MISS JORDAN was pre-
sented an honorary Doctor
of Laws from the college.
Several representatives
from colleges and universi-ties across the state and
from Kentucky attended.
President Walter Taylor
Reveley of Hampden-Syd-
ney College and James
Gordon Beasley, an alum-
nus of the University of
Virginia, represented the
two alma maters of Odom.
Odom received his B.A. de-
gree from Hampden-Syd-
ney College and his M.A.
and Ph.D. from the
University of Virginia.
The Bethel Balladeers,
under the direction of Dr.
Franklin Poole, and the
Bethel Brass, directed by
Daniel Pittman, provided
music for the processional
and recessional. The Bal-
ladeers sang an arran-
gement of "The Last
Words of David" preceding
the ceremonies.
