game, but we don t talk it much Rather W ashington has
become an increasingly a convention of hypocrites, men
and women who arc sanctimonious and self-righteous
about tfie sms of others but see nothing wrong in taking
corporate money to make speeches or appear on televi-
sion
1 remember one columnist slating the syllogism thuslv
' You write the column to get on telcv ision and you get on
television to get the speeches where the money is.' How
is that substantively different form what Brinkley is do-

If the high rollirig members of the Washington press
corps - the ones you see on television and at your state
hardware convention thought they could get away with
it, they'd lake Andreas' money loo and tell you what a
wonderful thing they were doing for the first Amend-
ment
Hey, hey, Paula
This is a personal letter to Paula Jones
Paula, if I may call you Paula I feel like I know you
I've seen you on television, read about you and have seen
your picture on the papers and
magazines for several years now
Matter of fact, about the only other
person who's been seen publicly
more than you is the president of the
United States. And last week you
were on the tube more than
M*A*S*H reruns You have now
become...as the newspaper labeled
you. an international personality
Now we know why this has all
come about. And Paula, believe me.
I hope you get what’s coming to
you . for whatever reason. And I
champion your right to do what's right.
But Paula, therc're a few other things going on in this
world You might have noticed in some of the papers in
which you gained such space that Israel and Palestine are
Mill having some pretty serious problems. And Saddam is
at it again telling us he's gonna cut off all search pro-
grams for his secret weapons. The Asian financial crisis is
threatening the world market...and there's Hong Kong
chicken flu...and record breaking ice storms and floods
with human needs to he met. Now I know you have your
needs loo...but Paula we hired the president to look after us
in all these problem areas. Do you think you might prevail
upon your lawyer* and the court to get to yours after we get
our money's worth from that feller you say done you
wrong? I mean, the man has got his basket full of problems
aiul we need him concern rating on these matters right now.
Then for what he might have done or not done in Arkansas,
let him face thJT after his contract rym nm with ■»« li'H
eevil men do lives after
them. The good is often interred in their bones.” It’ll keep.

A lot of wtiat went on Saturday was part of a process to
get participants on the nght track, to give them some
' grounding' from which the) could mov e forw ard and to
put them 'on the same page' The task before them was
enormous and to tackle it in a seven hour da> requires
some 'doing'

Other common ground can be covered by priv ate enter-
prise as well as the public sector, and it wouldnt be
surprising to see private enterprise kick off even before a
final vision is presented
It wav u>ugh for each group to squeeze all their hopes
and dreamv into just five specific areas, but 12 years is a
short time, and many goals that didn t make it to the ' final
five' m any one group, are sure to fall into place behind
what becomes that single vision.

Taxes will go up!
Like I said m my Last letter)Dec 1 1 i the roof at the high
school should have been first priority Covered walkways
could have saved thousands of dollars The gym at the
elementary school could have been turned into a central
cafetena The money spent on a new cafeteria, thigh
school cafeteria no longer being used • the v an to transport
food, all to feed about 150 kids could have been used for
this Also there are lcx> many employees <Cafetena and
office i for amount of kids enrolled We're all for kids being
educated, have a nice schixil. but we need a school board
and superintendent with a little common sense to accom-
plish this Don't believe taxes won t go up The • say they
won t but they will
Sure the kids won’t have to walk in the cold and rain to
go eat but covered walkways would have solved that
problem A little walk would do them good As far a^
somebody paid for our children, now we need to pay for
their s. we paid property taxes w hen ours were young, now
we need a break When I was young we didn t have nice
sc hools or air conditioning but we learned to read and w rite
regardless, it's not the buildings, it's the teachers and the
students willingness to learn You don't realize how high
taxes are until you get ready to retire and live on a fixed
income That's when you realize you should have gotten
out and voted NO “They will go up"

Clean up now!
We are Winter Texans expressing our voice
You are looking ai 12 years down the road W hat about
the present' As we take a walk we see a lot to be done now
1 You can t walk down the sidewalks they are covered
with overgrown grass, weeds and sand When the home
owners edge they don't clean up and you walk in it
2 Vacant homes and lots are overgrown with weeds and
junk In Florida if you don't care for your property they
clean and you pay
3 People who park their cars and trucks on the sidewalk
and unload the ware Oil all over walks When we walk we
have to go on the busy highway into traffic
4 If each family would clean up (including businesses)
That would be 50 percent better
5. Fishing piers - If you put barrels out for people to put
their cans and stuff in This is for visitors do your part.
6 Dogs that run loose at night Why doesn't the dog
catcher work a few hours at night'1 Maybe people would
keep their dogs tied up if they got a few fines. Dog do-do
all over walks and property.
7. If the mayor would walk around town not drive, he
would sec the junk around homes and businesses. Walk

Veterans support school
One of the goals of the American l-egion and the
Veterans of Foreign W ars is to support important commu-
nity issues and activities. Few activities are more impor-
tant to Port Aransas than the education of our children
Next Saturday we shall have the opportunity to support
a bond issue to upgrade and maintain our school buildings
Our school - its teachers, its administration, and its kids
have honored veterans by their participation in programs
to recognize the importance the importance of patriotism
and the Nation we served in war
Our kids supported us Now it is our turn to support
them
Hopefully our children will never have to go to war Our
best chance of assuring that they w ill not is to see that they
get a good education
Accordingly, we ask all members of the American
Legion and VFAV. all veterans, and all voters of Port
Aransas to give this bond issue their most senous consid-

So then to those who will recall mos ics of days gone by
which showed the fatally wounded soldier who has a
ogaretie thrust between his lips by a merciful buddy
I think of a conversation of a few days ago with a
respected lady who is an active worker in the American
Cancer Society She told me of a fellow worker so bmeriy
opposed to thc>se so fond of the weed that had she bean
preseni ai the scene remarked above she would have topi
the weed aw ay from the man, hoping his death be the more
hellish True story, dear reader, even the nigh I can't laud
the hellish part, no matter how reasonable the assumption
may be Assume then and no question, but dial would be
that distaff s sentiment toward any smoker, manor woman,
impounded in any Texas hospital, likely for that matter,
any in the naiion
THI S FAR. those who cherish the fragrant weed in a
pipe, be it the humble corncob, fine briar or meerschaum,
or a fine cigar, have been spared the wrath of the anti-
tohacco monomaniacal noted above Let us beware Ojp
time will come
I began to indulge at about age 15 or 16 w hen I obtain^)
permission to smoke from my father who specified tha0
smoke only a pipe At the ume I attended a bojp' sch<il
where indulgence was permitted under specific regula-
tions It must be noted that in preieen years, the designati<w
‘coffin nail*' was a commonplace term for cigarettes. o^£
that makers must have utilized no small effort todestroj.
So smoking among my preteen friends was mostly corfc
fined to comsilk and grapes me stems. J
It becomes obligatory to return to hospital denial ot
smokers, refusal that denies their human rights, so cruel
and inhumane treatment within those walls presumably
intended to cure and prov ide comfort, kindly and humane
treatment for ailing and suffering humankind Not sex
Facts are totally to the contrary
With that I do not write in defense of cigarette makers,
instead ponder the veracity of their opponents who have
vet to give ev idence that tobacco itself is debilitating For
tong a question m mind. Might the danger in the cigarette
be not in the tobacco content? Instead, the paper in which
it is rolled, also in the tobacco additives. To my know ledge,
neither of those possibilities has ever been considered nor
explored by either opponent or defendant
I feel obliged to dispute the veracity of the charge that
people become tobacco addicts, myself included, the w hile
confessing that the first and last acts of my every day are
indulgence in my pipe Even so it must be confessed that
at the end of a fine dinner the desire is demanding.
Acknowledge only the happy hours I sometimes spend in
the company of fnends who do not indulge
Back to hospitals where the human animal has reason to
expect thoughtful care and kindly consideration Instead,
this sinful smoker is mindful of hospital management that
is so unmindful of my genre as to provide walled court-
yards for the convenience of sinners such as I They are
dungeons exposed to the elements with only masonry
benches offered for comfort On such occasions I have
sometimes found myself in the w alled cage in the company
of the sinful institution staffers Hav ing on a few occasions
of unhappy recall been extended that luxurious consider-
ation I have eventually returned home to cuddle my poste*
nor on soft cushions for at least a week before recovery.
With that I think again of the earlier noted female of
dubious category
This lover of good tobacco would rather than breathe his
last in a hospital, chtxise and prefer to he cast into an
outside gutter with his pipe to pray that a passing stray
would iicx ms hand as a tmal gesture, a gesture not to be
expected of my own kind
EVEN THOL’GH I am uncertain as to the precise words.
I offer again my favorite Biblical quotation, “There are
wars, always have been wars and always shall be wars." Of
the last I have never been more certain than at the moment,
and not because of Saddam Hussein. Instead because wfc
live m a'so complacent world, especially here in America
where today near full employment is enjoyed and good
dollars and cents returns seem so secure. Altogether, we
are mostly all too content.
Believe me now If you think Saddam is a monster, think
of Israeli Netanyahu. Fancy their meeting in the boxing
ring — a wonderful way to bring peace in the Middle East.
If only the problems of the rest of the world could so easily
be settled. Likely, even that too rough for a fellow like our
Slick. So then a scenario for WWIII: A desperate Saddam
launches his weapons of mass destruction against Israel
and millions pensh. We at once join the fray and the show
is on. Sound too harsh, extreme0 But that is the world of
today.
