my hand with one of hers and
with her other hand she patted
my cheek.. .then she began
saying something in Albanian
over and over again.
I turned to ask my inter-
preter what she was saying,
and he told me that she was
saying, 'God bless America,
God bless America, that’s all I
can say is God bless
America. ”
There are many like that
Albanian woman who have
been given the gilt of freedom,
thanks to the sacrifices and
bravery of our l ighting men
and women. Like her, I say
God bless America and God
bless those who gave their
lives so that we may live free.

SchiaVO FromPaBe4A
woman’s family and doctors
kept her “alive” for years after
an auto accident even though
her brain was dead and there
was no possibility that she
would ever recover.
Her care consumed all of
her husband’s time, bankrupted
her family and profoundly
affected the woman’s young
children, who saw their mother
waste away, her muscles con-
tracting and her eyes staring
expressionlessly into space
every day.
This was surely not what
the woman would have wanted
and could have been prevented
with a medical power of attor-
ney and an advance directive
to her doctors.
Likewise, many of us know
people who can no longer
manage their affairs because of
a physical or mental incapacity
short of a frank coma or brain
injury. In such a case, a power
of attorney made out before
the incapacity arises can allow
a friend or loved one to man-
age your affairs for when you
cannot do so.
People afflicted by mtld
Alzheimer’s disease, for exam-
ple, benefit greatly when a
responsible friend or family
member can act for them in
paying bills, caring for and
disposing of real estate and
dealing with other legal and
financial issues.
Like life insurance, wills,
medical directives and powers
of attorney are precautions that
should be taken by anyone
with a family to protect and
not just when we know we are
about to die or become inca-
pacitated.
Many of us have a horror of
ending up like Schiavo, and
would not wish upon our fami-
lies the agony and horrendous
expense of keeping us in that
condition through extraordi-
nary means.
Some of us feel equally
strongly that life of any kind,
no matter how severely and
irreparably diminished, is
sacred and must be preserved
at all costs.
Regardless of your opinion
on these issues, you owe it to
your loved ones to let them
know what you want them to
do.
Tackling these issues today
can prevent terrible suffering
later.
As for me, if 1 am ever so
unlucky as to be in Terri
Schiavo’s condition, please, let
me go.

• Stage of your career - When you're just start-
ing out in your career, you've got many years to
overcome the “down” periods of some of the
more volatile investments in your 401 (k) such
as your company stock.
But when you're nearing retirement, you may
want to try to protect any gains you’ve achieved
and cut back on your risk level - so you can
potentially increase the money available to you
when you begin taking withdrawals.
Consequently, in your final years of con-
tributing to your 401 (k), you might consider
lowering the percentage of company stock in
your plan.
The “match” game
Your employer may offer shares of company
stock as a 401 (k) matching contribution. If so,
consider putting in as much as necessary to earn
the match.
From Page 4A
But, once you've received it. see if it's possi-
ble to “trade in” the company shares lor other
investments within your 401 (k)
An increasingly large number of companies
now allow this type of exchange.
Diversify, diversify, diversify
Ultimately, you’ll want to build a diversified
401 (k) portfolio.
Choose the mix of stocks, bonds, government
securities and other vehicles that fits your risk
tolerance, time horizon and long-term goals.
To get the appropriate asset allocation, you
may want to consult with a financial profession-
al.
Take action soon. Your 401(k) can be a great
way to save for retirement if you use it wisely.
