Easter light
When we started this column, we
had the idea that people would offer
us questions and our columns would
be in response to the interests and
concerns of the community. It has not
always worked out that way. More
otten than not. we have had to write
our columns out of our own feel for
the needs and concerns since no one
has proflered a question for us to
address.
This week, however, as we ap
proach Faster, 1 have a question It
came up at the IGA (where, along
with the Post Office and Dairy Queen,
most good theology happens). We
were talking about plans for Holy
Week and Faster and someone asked,
"How do you know when Faster will
come this year since it comes on dif-
ferent dates '" My flip answer was
that I know the date of Easter just like
everyone else does, by looking at a
calender.
As I reflected on the conservation.

it struck me that the question works at
both levels How is the date for Easier
established? The Council of Nicaea
(325 AD) set the festival of Easter on
the first Sunday following the new
moon after the vernal (spring) equi
nox. Therefore, the dates for Easter
may range from as early as March 22
to as late as April 25 Now, if you are
an astronomy buff, you can figure it
out for yourself without waiting for a
calender
But on a deeper level, the question
is much more profound How do we
know when Faster has come?
There is an ancient Rabbinical story
of a teacher who asked his students
how they could tell the difference
between light and datfe. One student
replied that when you could no longer
tell the difference between a white
tread and a dark one, that was night.
Another student suggested that when
you could no longer read the Torah
Without a lamp, that was night. The
third disciple offered that when you
could no longer tell if an approaching
child was 4 boy or a girl, that was
night 1 .
The teacher replied. "It is vfthen you
can Uxrk on any person, even an en-
emy, and see only the face of a brother
or sister, then at last light has come
and the long night has ended."
Easter is celebrated on March 30
this year But Faster comes whenever
and wherever Jesus message of the
love and grace of God, and of recon-
ciliation between neighbors and en-
emies. is made real
Happy Faster to you
