Country Day weathers elements
Sunshine makes afternoon appearance as crowds descend on downtown

The second Saturday in
October means two things in
Cedar Hill: (l) It’s time for
Country Day on the Hill; and
(2) get ready for rain.
The weather was wet off and
on during Cedar Hill’s annual
outdoor celebration of country
living, but the day ended in
sunshine as people from all
over southwest Dallas County
descended on downtown Cedar
Hill
“It was a great day, even
with the rain,” said Jimmie
Ruth White, Country Day’s
chief organizer. “I just felt like
I saw a lot of new faces. The
Old Settlers Reunion (Oct. 13)
was wonderful. The weather
was really great for that, and
(City Councilman) Wade
Emmert called the Bingo and
was really terrific.”
\
The King and Queen on the Hill, Chuck and Rosa
Finsley, greet visitors during the parade.
White said the annual pet
show was a big highlight this
year, featuring several dressed-
up animals that went beyond
the typical dog in a sweater,
including a very well-dressed
duck.
Commander Gary Poplin of
American Legion Post l l l
made the morning parade
“sing,” White said, despite the
showers.
“We expanded the Home-
town Talent Stage and added
more bleachers, and we still
needed more space,” White
said.
White credited Tejano music
group Grupo Lazzo with help-
ing lure more visitors from the
Dallas and Grand Prairie areas.
“I’ve got good comments
about the vendors, and the ven-
dors were happy, too," White
said. “They all said, ‘We will be
back.’”
She also praised members of
the Cedar Hill Parks and Rec-
reation Department.
“It’s all one big family that
helps Country Day happen,"
she said.
Next year is the 70th edition
of Country Day on the Hill
scheduled for Oct. 13, 2007
and White said she really wants
to take the festival back in time.
“I want the three-legged
sack race, l want watermelon
seed-spitting contests and
dominoes,” she said.

Basketball facilities in parks
or the lack of them once
again was a topic of concern at
the Cedar Hill City Council’s
regular Oct. 10 meeting.
Sheila Thomas, a regular
advocate for the disabled at
council meetings and a resident
of High Pointe, asked the coun-
cil to consider adding basket-
ball goals to neighborhood
parks close to her home.
“I have a 15-year-old son
who has a ball, but all he can
do is bounce it," she said
Crawford Park has basket-
ball facilities but is too far for
her son to walk, as is the
Recreation Center, Thomas has
said in past meetings.
Mayor Rob Franke said he
will ask the city’s parks adviso-
ry board look into the basket-
ball goals issue.
Corky Brown, a resident of
Waterford Oaks, said the
Waterford Oaks Public Impro-
vement District is looking at
vacant land near Waterford
Oaks Elementary for possible
basketball goal locations.
“The PID would contribute
some money, and I would hope
the city and school district
could chip in some, as well,”
Brown said.
He added that the PID is
sensitive to resident concerns
about bright lights on at night
and wondered if a 9 pin. cutoff
time might be acceptable.
Rod Reed of High Pointe
said a new park scheduled to be
dedicated in November in The
Meadows subdivision of High
Pointe will be a multi-purpose
facility with basketball goals
and noted that goals at High
Pointe Elementary have recent-
ly been removed.
City council member
C lifford Shaw said he was sen-
sitive to residents’ concerns
about a lack of playing space
but added that public basket-
ball facilities come with unin-
tended consequences.
“I understand everyone’s
pain ... but we’ve got goals at
the rec center and at other
