Army Can Help
Students wondering how to
repay National Direct Student
Loans or Guaranteed Student
Loans should consider a plan
offered by the U.S. Army. IJncler
the Army's Loan Repayment
Program (LRP) soldiers enlisting
in the Regular Army who meet
established requirements can
eliminate 33 1/3 percent of their
loan debts or $1500 - whichever is
greater - for each year of their
service commitments. Thus, a
three-year term of enlistment
would totally eliminate a loan
debt, and even a two-year
enlistment would pay off 2/3 or
$3000 of a loan debt.
The three-year plan provides that
loans be repaid in three equal
amounts over a three-year period.
For instance, a loan balance in
good standing of $30,00 would be
repaid by the government in three
annual payments of $10,000 each.
Qualifying soldiers enlisting in
the Army Reserve are also offered
loan repayment opportunities to
the tune of 15% or $500 for each
year of service. In a standard six-
year reserve enlistment, a loan of
up to $10,000 could be repaid in
full. Money paid on loans is
considered taxable income.
In addition to the Loan
Repayment Program, both the
Regular Army and the Army
Reserve continue to offer the
educational benefits, skill training,
and job options that have made the
Army a preferred career source for
many years.
