Poet master Jas. B. Seargent stated
to the Leader representative this
morning that owing to the muddy and
wet condition of some of the street*,
caused by the big dredge, some reel
denee* could not be reached by car-
rier* delivering the mail. He advise*
rltlsen* who desire their mall deliv-
ered at their bonnet, to have walks
built to their residences, as the law
does wot require a carrier lo deliver
mail under coeditlona above named.
The National and State election in
Orange, both city and county, passed
off very quietly and s very light vote
was itolled, especially by the Demo
cratle (tarty, as compared 'with It*
vote in the primary of July.
The total vote of the city was 434.
which is considered light for a general
election.
While the returns are slow romlng
In from the cotin try precincts, enough
of them have been secured to ascer-
tain that all of the amendments to
the constitution hsve carried
Bryan received In the city 341 votes,
and Taft $7. This Includes both the
court house snd Fifth street product*.
Reports from LcmonvIUe are that
the vote was Bryan l». Taft I, the
tickets hesdedby each candidate re-
ceiving that vote their entire length
Testa cast one vote all the way
through for the republican ticket,
while Bryan's ticket, both aute and
national was given 13 voles.
At the city precincts, the voting wa*
scattered aomewhat. there being votes
cast for several candidates and Issues
on one ticket, while the remainder
was given to another parly or scat-
tered throughout several parties.
The extreme length of the ticket
necessitated considerable time in can-
vassing the returns and counting was
commenced before 4 o'clock, th* work
being completed about 40 30 o'clock.
The death knell to democratic hopes
was sounded last night at 1ft o'clock
by the siren on the btg dredge, seven
long blasts, the Taft signal, being
blown, and the last one wa* made good
and kmg.
Returns from the Election through'
out foreign states commenced reach-
ing the city shortly before eight
o’clock, and the Postal Telrgragvh
company was made headquarter* for
several hour* lari night by Interested
one*, msny remaining until the returns
quit coming, which was nearly 13
o’clock.
From the beginning of the rom-
lng In of the return*. Taft appeared
to have been the choice of the p**»
pie over and throughout the country,
and the election wa* conceded hint
by local parties long before 10 o’rlork.
at which time the signal for Taft's
election was given by the big dredge
through the arrangement of (he Daily
leader.
From returns over the country. Mr
Bryan did not run any better race
than did Alum B. Parker, the nomt
nee of the democratic party four year*
ago. Taft wilt receive aa malty elec-
toral vote*, snd probably a few more
than did Roosevelt tn the Psrker-
Roneevelt election, while the addition
of Oklahoma slace that elect Urn give*
seven more elect oral vote* to the
demoqyatlc candidate.
