A COURT DECISION

against Orlando Jones and Sol. Lych-
tensteln. Judge Madifox of the Su-
preme Court, derides that frequent
wagering by the same person, whether
at evgn money or at varying odds,

making unless there Is a recording or
registering of the bets.
The Cotton Market.
New York. Jan. 12.—Trade at the
opening of tbe cotton market this
morning was broad, with first prices
to 7 points higher. Commission
houses were large buyers. At tbe
»atne time there was active unloading
by room traders. Private cables

Eliza Was In Tow of Launch Sylvia
and Had Cargo of Cotton Seed From
Johnson’s Bayou—Boats Headed In
Opposite Directions.
This morning about 9 o’clock, as th#
launch Sylvia, Captain A. L. Myers,
was coming into port with the large
sloop Eliza, Captain Isaac Anderson,
of Johnson's Bayou, In tow, that boat
and the bargs Mexico, which was be-
ing towed alongside by the tow boat
chief, collided with the barge and suf-
fered Injury to the extent of a broken
mast and bowsprit, besides shaking
up the large cargo of cotton seed
which the sloop had aboard.
The two boats were going In oppo-
site directions, the Chief switching
the barge Mexico to the Lutcber &
Moore docks, where It is to be loaded
with a big oargo of lumber, and the
sloop coming to the city landing with
cargo of cotton need, which was
destined to an up-state town, and
when directly opposite the office of
the Miller-Link Lumber company, the
Collision happened.
Captain Raymond Henry of Hie
Chief stated to a Leader representa-
tive that signals were given for star-
board side, and th^t the Sylvia with
tow held that course until In front
the barge when It commenced to
to port, and he at once gave the
signal to back up, hut it was hardly
time to keep from catching a part
the sloop, doing the damage above
described. Had tbe barge struck the
sloop headon, instead of catching a
corner of it, tbe sloop would In all
probability have been sunk -with Its
cargo.
Captain Henry stated that at the
time of the crash, there was no one
aboard the sloop, which was being
towed behind the Sylvia, and that he
did all he could to avert the accident.
