MAIL ORDERS AND ADVERTISING
■‘Times is in receipt of a letter from a mail
order firm expressing dissatisfaction because
no order had been booked for us, and saying
that they “are accustomed to receiving orders
from those who receive their catalogue,” and
expressing a fear lest said catalogue had gone
astray; that they would be pleased to send an-
other, etc. If the home merchant ever hopes to
compete with the mail order man, he will have
to meet him on his own ground—persistent ad-
vertising; for with a constantly widening field,
the mail order firm will never Ik* met and
whipped anywhere else. The merchant who
shows his goods and quotes prices only upon
application is being outdistanced by the cour-
ageous fellow who displays his wares by pic-
ture, tags them with a price and risks the loss
of a few dollars in the hn*|H* of gaining many.
The mail order man,is shrewd, lie never waits
for a busy woman to come and see if lie’s got
what she wants. Not he. He puts his store on
pajier and sends it to her to look />ver at her
leisure, and he makes it so attractive that he
persuades her that he’s got just what she wants.
The home merchant lias a better plan than that,
if he would use it. Instead of cataloging his
entire store, he can tell alwiut it by bits ami
always have something new to offer. .And if
you think women, and men, too, do not care
for new tilings, note the fashions. But “price
is the salesman” for the catalogue house. What
does it profit the home merchant for him to
have In-Iter goods for the same or less money,
if he keeps the fact to himself, and what does
it profit the customer? The catalogue man
gets the profit and Uncle Sam gets the pick-
ings. This little ad sermon was called out by
the ingenious hint of the Bargain House that
the Madam was not keeping up with her neigh-
bors. People don’t like to fall behind, you
know.—Timpson Times.
The Gonzales Inquirer denounces the “Nve
Tent Show Company” as a rank fake, whose
performances are bummy and unworthy of pub-
lic patronage, and warns the people of Texas to
be on the lookout for them. Just at this season
there are entirely too many of these tramp tent
shows traveling through the state bumming
people out of their money.—Brenham Banner.
The Nve company hung paper billing their
tent show in Orange for this week, but nary
a word has been seen or heard of them.
It. is well for citizens of every community
to remember that mail order houses do not con-
tribute one cent for taxes or license, nor for
churches or school houses or charity in the com-
munity, while the merchant is the real citizen
in all that the word implies.

THE LOST DOLLAR.
The Retail Merchant says the following is
the sad story of the neighborhood dollar that
went astray and never found it* way home.
Ten vears ago an Allen count}' (Kansas) far-
mer put liis initials on a dollar hill. Flu* next
day he went to the nearest town and spent it
with a merchant. Before the year was out In-
got the dollar hack. Four times in six years
the dollar came back to him for produce, and
three times lie heard of it. in tin* pickets of his
neighbors. (
The last time he got it back five years ago.
lie sent it to a mail order house. He has never
seen that dollar since, and never will. That
dollar will never pay any more school or road
tax for him, will never build or brighten any
of the homes of the community. He sent it
entirely out of tin* circle of usefulness to him-
self find neighbors.
How many dollars, how many millions of dol-
lars, are going away from home never to re-
turn every year 1 Some statistician lias estimat-
ed that about 250,000,000 of them take French
leave of their home communities annually by
the mail order route. Every one that departs
from home in this way takes a dollar’s worth
of prosperity out of the community.
Chairman Warren B. Reed in making selec-
tions for the committee on credentials for the
Inland Waterways Association in convention at
Now Orleans, yesterday named Mayor E. W.
Brown of Orange as one of the committeemen.
Former Mayor Geo. W. Bancroft is named on
the committee of nominations. The Orange
delegation went to New Orleans to promote
every interest of the association and it is pleas-
ing to note that the delegation has been thus
recognized.
Contractor Newby, who for the past several
weeks has been engaged in drilling the twelve
