SA Symphony Returns to SPC for
19th Annual Residency Program
St. Philip’s will
welcome the San
Antonio Symphony
for the 19th Annual
Residency Program
at the community
college February 5-
10. This year, SPC
student and soprano,
Charlene Goliday
(right), will make
her singing debut
with the symphony during
the weekday chamber or-
chestra performances. The
San Antonio Symphony
Residency Program is an
education-focused collabora-
tion aimed at introducing the
symphony to new audiences,
in particular students.
The Symphony Residency
Program again will offer area
students-ffom elementary to
college-as well as the gen-
eral public an opportunity
for up-close experiences with
symphony musicians through
a series of open rehearsals and
free concerts on the school’s
main campus. While in resi-
dence, guest Conductor Laura
Jackson and guest soloist
Velvet Brown will provide
lectures, master classes, and
interact with SPC music stu-
dents and faculty.
The Residency Program
will feature six open rehears-
als and three weekday cham-
ber orchestra performances
and will culminate with a
full orchestra concert finale
and pre-concert lecture on
Saturday, February
10. All rehearsals
and performances,
including the concert
finale, will be held
in the Watson Fine
Arts Center and are
free and open to the
public. The weekday
chamber orchestra
performances fea-
turing Goliday have
been reserved for
elementary, middle,
and high school
students. Week-
day rehearsals and
the finale concert,
however, are open
to the community.

massage beginning at 10:00 a.m. and the last one at 5:30 p.m. All massages

SPC Culinary Student to Represent
College at USDA Leadership Conference
Elijah Paul Washington,
a culinary arts major, will
represent St. Philip’s and the
Department of Tourism, Hos-
pitality, and Culinary Arts at
a Leadership Conference in
Washington, DC, January 28-
31. As a student at SPC, Wash-
ington is actively involved in
the U.S. Department of Agri-
culture (USDA) Grant Project,
“ProyectoAlimento.” He will
join 11 other students who are
involved in USDA projects
from across the country as they
leam more about the USDA
and present information about
their projects to the group’s
leadership and congressional
leaders. Washington is one of
only two community college
students selected in a group
that includes such institutions
as New Mexico State Univer-
sity, California State Univer-
sity, Texas A&M University
Kingsville, and the University
of Puerto Rico.
Proyecto Alimento is a
grant-funded project aimed at
encouraging more students from
Hispanic-Serving Institutions to
pursue and obtain college de-
grees in the field of nutrition. In
August 2005, two San Antonio
institutions of higher education
with predominantly Hispanic
student populations - SPC and
the University of the Incarnate
Word (UIW) - partnered on
the two-year project, which is
made possible through a USDA
grant.
According to project director,
Mary Kunz, a registered dieti-
tian and chair of the Depart-
ment of Tourism, Hospitality
and Culinaiy Arts, the Proyecto
Alimento: Success in Food and
Nutrition program addresses
two pressing issues affecting
the Hispanic population: the
disparity in numbers enrolling
in and graduating from college,
and the alarming incidence
of obesity. Specifically, the
program focuses on increas-
ing the number of Culinary
Arts majors who receive an
associate’s degree in applied
science and then transfer to
UIW to complete a bachelor’s
of science degree in nutrition.
Washington is a Culinary
Arts major with a 3.8 GPA.
He will graduate this corning
May and will then begin the
Bachelor’s Degree program in
nutrition at UIW. This semes-
ter he is getting a “head start”
on his UIW courses by taking
Introduction to Dietetics as a
part of the Proyecto Alimento
project. He completed his
culinary/nutrition internship
at the San Antonio Food Bank
(SAFB) last semester. He
worked under the direction of
the SAFB dietitian and con-
ducted healthy-cooking dem-
onstrations at a variety of com-
munity service organizations
throughout San Antonio.

est high school students will put
their technical skills and talents
to the test in the SkillsUSA
District XI Championships to
be held February 2-3 at the SPC
Southwest Campus. Students
representing SkillsUSA clubs
(formerly known as VICA/
Vocational Industrial Clubs
of America) will compete in a
variety of technical skills and
leadership competitions for a
chance to represent District
XI at the state championships
in March.
St. Philip’s, offering the
