BETTY BIVINS COOK
Many of us lost an old friend
on Oct. 19 when “Big Tex”
caught fire, probably because
of an electrical short. In just
a few minutes, all that was left
was his skeletal frame.
Mirror Publisher Russ
Greene was watching news in
his office when the announce-
ment of the fire was made.
“BigTex just burned,” he told
us. Immediately memories of
the many times I’d met friends
at “Big Tex” when I was in high
school went through my mind.
Those were during the days
when one Saturday during the
State Fair of Texas was desig-
nated as school day. Harmony
carried two bus loads of FFA
and FHA students to the fair ev-
ery year. The fair grounds were
so big that if you got separated
from your friends, it was nearly
impossible to find them — un-
less you’d made plans to meet at
Big Tex if that should happen.
This was because Big Tex was
so tall he could be seen from
anywhere in the fairgrounds.
From reports I’ve heard, just
about everyone else who has
ever visited the State Fair used
Big Tex as a meeting place too.
I felt a little better when I
learned a short while later that
plans were already underway
to restore him in time for next
year’s State Fair.
Big Tex would have been
quite young the first time I saw
him. I don’tremember the exact
year, but it was either 1952 or
1953. Mother and Daddy took
me, my sister Patsy, and our
cousin, Bobbie Finney (Baker)
to the State Fair one Sunday. My
husband Royce says he’s pretty
sure that it was 1953 the first
time he “met” Big Tex.
Kerens, Texas is known as
the “Birthplace of Big Tex,”
although he originally was a
49-foot-tall Santa Claus, built
to encourage holiday sales in
the town. The figure was built
by members of the community,
who welded the frame, fabri-
cated the body and sewed the
clothing.
In 1951, State Fair presi-
dent R.L. Thornton purchased
Santa’s components for $750
and had artist Jack Bridges
transform them into a cowboy,
giving birth to “Big Tex.”
Big Tex made his debut at
the 1952 fair, dressed in denim
jeans and a plaid shirt donated
by the H.D. Lee Company of
Shawnee Mission, Kan. It was
in 1953 that Big Tex also began
speaking.
Big Tex celebrated his 50th
birthday in 2002 and received
a birthday cake and an AARP
card. Shades of gray were
added to the hair and wrinkles
were added the figure’s hands
and face as Big Tex continued
to “age.”
According to news reports,
the fire occured on Big Tex’s
60th birthday.
