Westward from tbs Cascade of
Nunoblkl, through the ever-shifting
tracery-work of pines and wild aza-
lea*, you can see. If you would climb
a quarter of a mile, on a spring day,
a stretch of land that looks more like
a dream than the actual solid footstool
of Ood. Behind you the city of Kobe
fumes, roara, kicks up dirt and filth
In the eyea of the good-natured aun
and amears bU bright face. From the
height you could also spy a straw-
thatched cottage burled In the yellow
of the rape.
That was her home; there we aaw
her. Her environment was common—
her drees, her cottage, the people
about her,—yes, the people especially.
But all these common things, because
of her, seemed to me as if 1 saw them
on the canvas of Millet or Rembrandt.
She was a part of the landscape, and

whether the Higher Artist would take
It as a compliment or not.
Describe her?' Better ask me to pet-
rify a dream. Her lips? Oh!—one
folds his bands on his left side when
he speaks of them. Her eyes? Ah,
well;
Not satisfied with her success la
this, her fair masterpiece, Nature
placed her In the rustic surrounding
to heighten all the charms of the girl
through the touch of that potent ma-
gician called surprise. Yes, candidly,
I was surprised, and so was Mr. Sid-
ney White, who was with me. Mr.
White is an American who has spent
more years of his Ufa In Paris and
abroad than under the roof of hla
mother. He was an artist,—an ar-

In love with a woman as he was with
Art. Take my word for It. he had
that something that goes into ths
making of a true artist, that all-ab-
sorblng something which made him
by turns a fool and a god; be had
that Idolatrous adoration for the beau-
tiful; that contempt of everything
common. In order to picture his
meeting with the girl, you must fsney

O Toms was hsr name. O Torn*
became an object of study to Sldnoy.
Thsn, s short time afterwards, the
objeqt of study—not only artistic but
also—r'rom ths very start O Tome
was a thing of beauty to him, and In
ths course of time a joy torevsr as
well. When, therefore, about e
month afterwards 1 went up to hie
studio I was not surprised to see It
converted Into a huge multlfaeed mir-
ror of O Tome —every pose of her
figure, every expression of her fea-
tures. the Innumerable blendings of
her many moods, were caught In all
the conceivable cunning of colors.
'Am 1 really as pretty as that.
White •an’"
‘Very, very much more beautiful,
mademoiselle!”
“And my hair—and oh, but my eye
are they softly dreaming aa they ara
yonder?"
'That? Why, that is nothing but
a shadow; that Is nothing but s pic-
ture, like a picture un a temple wall,
y picture of a goddess, you Ituow.
One can look at a picture, not the
goddess -the original la too das-
sUng!”
O Tome, who was uot sure whether
she understood this poetic ambiguity
of the artist, smiled as If to say,
“Ths best thing 1 can do for you Is to
pretend that 1 believe all that you
•ay.”
“But. really, Whlte-san, does your
humble maid please her master,
then?"
“Hush, sweet one. you should rath-
er say that your alavs worships hla
Ideal."
“What do ycj think I have found
aow. old man?” he asked me one day
as he burst Into my den. Dropping
my brush at the suddenness of hie
entry and Interrogation, 1 answered:
“Hello! you? Why, 1 have not tko
slightest Idea."
“Well, she Is not a beautiful study,
but she Is as bright as a Buddha's
eyes—1 mean her mind. You ought1
Its some and eee her.”
, Yes, I found out that she had

Sandaw In a Harem.
No oas who has sot dwelt In that
mysterious land can have any con-
ception of the Jealous care with
which Tvrklah women are guarded on
every occasion. When Sandow via
lied Turkey be wae engaged by a*
wealthy paths to give lessons In phy-
sical culture to the women of hla
harem. When the modern Samson
was ushered into the bsremllk. how-
ever. he found the room where the lee-
suns were to be given divided across
the middle by a high screen of muak-
rabteh work, through the carved inter-
stices of which the women could
watch his every movement without,
being themselves visible. He was In-;
mrutted to take up bis position In the
brilliantly lighted space In front of
tba screen, and n dozen or more
women followed hie exercises, ges-
ture by gesture, from the other aide
of the lattice work, without hts being
aware of their presence save by the
rustle of their garments. Two gi-
gantic enunchs, with drawn sword a,
never took their eyea from him dur-
ing the whole performance —Every-
