Betty Russo, Polk County coordinator for the Certified
Retirement Community Program, attended a ceremony
in Austin designating April 20 as Retire in Texas Day
with Agriculture Commissioner Todd Staples.

top choice for retirees
Marcus had a great
time at the Easter
Eggstravaganza,
even if his basket
still had room for
more eggs.
Waiting was the hardest part for at least two of Sat-
urday's pa^icipants in the Easter Eggstravaganza at
Pedigo Park. City of Livingston staffers and an army of
volunteers and sponsors stuffed treats into thousands of
eggs that only took moments to collect.
AUSTIN - Agriculture
Commissioner Todd Staples
applauded a resolution by
the Texas Legislature declar-
ing April 20 Retire in Texas
Day. The resolution, recog-
nizes the Texas Department
of Agriculture’s GO TEXAN
Certified Retirement Com-
munity (CRC) Program for
attracting retirees to Texas,
and the positive social and
economic impact it has on the
state. The CRC Program helps
communities attract retirees
and potential retirees to make
their homes in Texas.
Polk County was certified
as a Retirement Community in
2009 after completing a 177-
page extensive assessment of
what Polk County has to offer
prospective retirees.
“Our low cost of living lets
retirees live large and spend
small,” Commissioner Staples
said. “Millions of baby boom-
ers are looking to relocate
to cities that have excel-
lent medical care, affordable
housing and cultural activi-
ties when they retire. The GO
TEXAN Certified Retirement
Community Program helps cit-
ies and counties throughout
Texas develop and maintain
the resources they need to at-
tract retirees, while giving po-
tential new residents a sense
of confidence in the areas they
select.”
Nationally acclaimed econ-
omist Dr. Ray Perryman rec-
ognizes the impact retirees
have on cities across Texas.
“Texas offers an ideal en-
vironment for retirees,” Dr.
Perryman said. “It has a low
cost of living, an excellent cli-
mate, outstanding health care
institutions and amenities for
everyone. Texas has a vibrant
and diverse economy, and of-
fers every type of amenity and
opportunity. It is little wonder
that it is a destination of choice
for many retirees, who in turn,
infuse their communities and
the economy with their own
resources and talents.”
Dr. Perryman also points to
research showing extensive
financial benefits for bringing
retirees to communities.
“When retirees choose a
community, they typically
bring with them substantial
monetary assets and dispos-
able wealth that translates
into consumer spending and
resulting multiplier effects
throughout the local area,” Dr.
Perryman said. To become a
CRC, communities must com-
plete an application and retire-
ment desirability assessment
covering a wide range of top-
ics, including demographics,
tax structure, local housing
availability, safety, employ-
ment opportunities and avail-
ability of health care services,
public transportation and
more. The application process
also requires communities to
submit a marketing plan and
long-term plan for maintain-
ing and improving desirability
to retirees.
