ESS ON TRAIN.
Telephone by Which |
Can Be Stopped.
nuBmai
The Erie railroad tested a wireless I
telephone yesterday which, it is be-
lieved will not only make telephonic
communication with distant points
possible for train passengers, but will
act also as an automatic brake for
trains which are entering upon a dan-
ger zone covering 2 miles ahead. The [
telephone is the invention or Fred Iat-
croix, a young electrical engineer of I
San Antonio, Texas, and is operated
by a third rail. This rail is not dead- ]
ly and one may touch it without ser-
ious results.
The test was made on a train mov-1
ing between Newark and South Pet-1
erson, at an average speed of about |
thirty-five utiles an hour.
Tltt contrivance is much like an or-1
dinary telephone. It is operated by)
the engineer and is suspended in the
locomotive cab. It records on a clock
arrangement each stop of the train,
and when there is trouble on the road
within two miles in advance of the
train the device automatically sets the]
airbrakes, the degree of their applica-
tion being determined by the engi-1
necr,'who may set the machine to ap-
ply the brakes immediately or by de-1
grecs. .
The test train was run close to a |
local yesterday, and when it reached
the danger zone the air was automat-
ically cut off and the train brought |
to a standstill within fifty feet, de-
spite the fact that the engineer was I
holding the valve open. The train
s moving at about twenty-five
miles an hour and there was no jar]
in the stopping
A public test will be held on No-
vember 10 in about the same vicinity,
at which time two engines will be run
from, opposite directions at full speed.
Mr l.acroix says he is confident his
device will stop both engines and j
prevent a collision.
Telephone communication was es-|
tablishcd. and it was said that voices
were carried plainly—New York)

King Edward in 6£
London. Nov. 10.—Edward VII., of
Great Rritain and Ireland and the
British dominion- beyond the seas.
King, ilefender of the faith arid Em-
peror of India, today celebrated bis
sixty-eighth birthday Gun* boomed
in a royal salute, brother monarch*
sent messages of congratulation anil
there was general rejoicing, but the
spectacular features of the observ-
ance were far overshadowed by the
celebration of Lord Mayor's Hay,
which marked the induction into of-
fice of Sir John Knill. the Catholic
chief executive of London
Today’s pageant in honor of the
Lord Mayor was shorn of many of
the features familiar in past years.
The floats and other spectacles illus-
trating the ancient history of London
were eliminated, and the pageantry
took the font, of a great military
parade. A banquet this evening will
he attended by many of the notables
of the kingdom

Granddaughter of King Edward—
Princess Alexandra.
the girl who is said to be a very
pietty child, a year or tw.; y.ump'-r
than the King Although she is a
member of one of the oldest and most
noble families in Portugal, the King
and Queen realized that a marriage
between her and her son was out of
the question.
London, Nov 10.-—King Edward’s
birthday was made the occasion for
an announcement on what is appar-
ently good authority, that his grand-
daughter, Princess Alexandra, daugh-
ter of the King of Fife, is to become
the queen of King Manuel of Portu-
gal. The Portugese monarch will ar-
rive in England shortly to visit the
King, jjml this gives color to the ru-
mors of a royal romance. King Man-
uel will celebrate his twentieth birth-
day next Monday.
There is little doubt that an English
queen will he seated on the Portu-
guese throne In the past, rumor has
associated the name of Manuel with
that of Princess Patricia, who is al-
leged to have refused King Atphonto
owing to a repugnance to the Catho-
lic faith. Others have intimated that
the choice of his Royal Highness
would fall upon Princes* Beatrice,
daughter of the late Duke of Edin-
burgh and a niece of King Edward.
The Princes* Alexandra is to be the
lucky—or otherwise—, there i* now
little doubt.
In the meantime, Portugal’s young
King is rumored not to have closed
hi* eyes to beauty nearer home. The
Queen Mother and the Ministers are
n-uch concerned by the attachment
for the daughter of a lady-in-waiting
to Queen Amelie The love affair and
th# boy king's attitude bid fair to dis-
rupt the matrimonial plans being laid
for him. King Charle* and Queen
Amelie were fairly aware of the fond-
ness of Manuel, when a prince, for
