PORT ARANSAS SOUTH JETTY
Island observer-
Southbound stopover
Editor’s not*: Tony Amos, w ho
writes the Island Observer column
for the South Jetty, sent the fol-
lowing letter, dated Dec. 7, from
Pnnt* Aivn*« Hiil* ht« !•«* step
in “civilization" before a two-
month stay at an isolated research
facility in the Antarctic.
Strange, in a way, that I have just
travelled from a Sand) Port to a
Sandy Point. Yet apart from the
names, the two places have very lit-;
tie in common. For example, mid-
summer, Port A: High temperature
88, low temperature 82, seawater
temperature 86, wind SE at 10-15
knots. Midsummer, Punta A: High
temperature 48, low temperature
37. seawater temperature 45, wind
W at 30-40 knots. And there are
other differences. Almost everyone
in the world is north of here. It gets
dark at 11 p.m. There is still blue sky
to be seen at midnight. Southern
black-backed gulls w heel overhead;
giant petrels glide with almost no
wing, flapping across the deep blue
water flecked with numerous w hite-
caps; a pair of strange buff-necked
ibis call to each other as they head
to one of the remote islands; a sea
lion (?) briefly shows its head and
disappears.
There aren’t many trees hert*and
the land is barren and windswept.
Sheep graze over the hillsides. There
are only two towns south of here —
Ushvaia in Argentina and Puerto
Williams in Chile. On uur w ay south
to the Antarctic Ocean we will pass
close to Puerto Williams, w here the
Chilean pilot will be dropped off.
We are going down the famous
--By Tony Amos
Beagle Channel w hen we leave here
at about 8 p.m. this evening. It will
take about 28 hours to navigate
that channel and then it will be out
into tin Drake Passage, where
Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean
meet, south of Cape Horn. It will
take us3M* days to cross the Drake,
the only place in the world where
there is an unbroken stretch of
ocean encircling globe. The wind
has an unlimited fetch there and
can blow with terrifying strength. It
does so most of the time. On board
the research vessel Polar Duke a
225 foot long icebreaker, people are
tying down their equipment and
“battening down the hatches" for
the journey south. 1 must go and do
the same soon so that all m> equip-
ment that survived the shipment
from P.A. to P.A. does not take a
dive in the Drake Passage.
In the main square of this P.A.,
there is a statue to Magellan in wea-
thered bronze. Allegorical features
surround the navigator's feet. One
is a splendidly sculpted Indian fig-
ure whose big toe has been polished
brightly by people who touch it to
ensure their return to this, the
world’s southernmost city. Not being
superstitious, I did not touch the
toe (at least not when anyone was
looking!).
On t he dock where w e are berthed
sits a very strange, red vessel, about
18 feet long. It looks like a lifeboat. I
hope it acts like a lifeboat, too,
because there is a man who is going
to row that vessel across the same
Drake Passage as we are about to
cross. I hope he touched the Indian’s
toe!
Living history
Faculty members in the Port Aransas Independent School District were treated to time off
for a holiday reception on Thursday, Dec. 18, when local parents and other residents
filled in for them in their classrooms. Taking over tiie duties in Leif Johnson’s history class
at Port Aransas High School, above, were Mark Creighton and Elda May Roberts. Mrs.
Roberts, a resident of Port Aransas for more than 50 years, provided some eyewitness
memories of island history, along with Creighton, who recently reprinted Mrs. Roberts’
book, “The Stubborn Fisherman.” (Staff photo by Paul Cline Jr.)
