as He was a lawyer a newspaper
man and best of all a friend to all
who knew him Wllce Ewing had
many virtues to commend him to his
fellowmen not least of which was his
fidelity to his friends Peace and
honor to his memory
The Herald calls the attention of
the reader to the Farmers Union col-
umn In tills paper It is edited by
the Corresponding Secretary W E
Williams who is thoroughly compe-
tent to present the claims of the
Union to the public Most people
should be not only familiar with the
work the Union is undertaking but
should by now be thoroughly In sym-
pathy with It and stand ready to help
In any way > osslble to make the
Union n success that the farmer may
he more prosperous Even if loyalty
does not Influence such a sentiment
policy should for when the farmer is
lirospeious the rest of the country
ijets along proportionately well Head
the articles prepared by Mr Williams
TIfere seems to be much misunder-
standing on the part of many honest
Deinocints regarding the nomination

PALESTINE TEXAS OCTOBER 24 1906
The first norther of the winter call-
ing for overcoats came In last night
and today has been quite cool
Vice President Fairbanks opened
his campaign In Oklahoma Monday
And the same day it snowed Ice
The Herald believes In supporting
the Democratic nominees all of them
all or the time It also believes in
the great Democratic right to criticise
a public official on his public acts
It might be a good investment to
have flues and chimneys examined
right now at the very beginning of the
winter season To neglect it may
niean the destruction of your house
The magnificent attendance at the
various fairs being held over the coun-
try is a sure indication of the prosper-
ous condition of the people When
people have money they do not hesi-
tate to go visiting
Our people should keep an eye on
the tobacco industry as started in this
county We have magnificent soli
and climate for the growing or tobac-
co and it is a crop that will make the
county prosperous if haridled intelli-
gently
The farmers of Anderson county
who have devoted their time to mak-
ing a crop Instead of running about
looking for a better country have dona
well this year and are in good shape
financially In fact the people of this
county generally are In better shape
than they have been in many years
The Dallas Pair seems to have been
unfortunate In drawing more people
than the city could take care of
Many pe6ple could ot find places to
sleep at any price and had to pay
most any price forsomething to eat
Dallas having built a bigger fair the
fair should now get busy and build a
bigger Dallas
The spirit of A W Ewing tool its
flight from its mortal home this morn-
ing at six oclock The death of
Wilce Ewing will be regretted by
many friends in Palestine and In TeX
of Senator Bailey In Texas by the
Democratic primary vote and in con-
vention As the Herald understands
the proposition n nomination for
United States senator by primary or
convention is not authorized by any
provision of our election law and is
an office vested only In the legislature
At the very most technically speak-
ing Mr Baileys alleged nomination
can be nothing more than an endorse-
ment by the people o indicate to the
legislature that his services have been
acceptable The legislature Is no
more bound by such an endorsement
than It would be by any other sugges-
tion made by the Democratic party of
Its state A nominee for governor is
provided for by law and his nomina-
tion is genuine but in the case of a
senator the nomination can be under
our present law nothing norc than
an endorsement Is this not so When
we get a law providing for the election
of United States senators by a direct
vote of the people then we can nomi-
nate senators by primaries or conven-
tions Until we do the nominating
power Is not vested In the people We
will some day nominate and elect sen
ators by a direct vote
It is now an open question among
the people as to whether it was Ed-
itor Robinson of the Waco Times
Herald that was converted or Senator
Bailey From the evidence at hand it
looks more like a Bailey conversion
than a Robinson conversion Mr
Bailey is said to have made the fol-
lowing confession In his Mart speech
They say a senator and a member of
congress have no right to practice law
for public service corporations I sub-
scribe to that In modified form H
wliile I am in congress the Gainesville
Water Company a corporation organ-
ized to furnish water to the people of
that town to give purity and health to
the people becomes Involved In litiga-
tion I would have the right to repre-
sent It because the Gainesville Water
Company wants nothing from con-
gress and Is not regulated by con-
gress I say that no senator or mem-
ber of congress has a right to practice
law for public service corporations
which apply to congress for favors or
are regulated by congress

COUNTY CHAIRMAN FUNDER
BURK WRITES INTERESTINGLY
ABOUT THE MATTER
To the Democratic Voters of Ander
son County
Tuesday November Cth Is election
tlay I wish to urge every Democrat
and every one else who will vote for
the Democratic nominees to go out
to the polls and vote There are man
reasons why every one should do this
At tills election it is proposed to
amend the state constitution in three
Important particulars While the
Democratic party has taken no official
notice favorable or unfavorable to
these amendments but has left the
matter to be decided irrespective of
party lines yet the matter of amend-
ing the organic law is of such Impor-
tance that every Rood Democrat
should make it a point to express his
choice on these propositions
The first of these amendments pro
Xscs to add to the properties ex-
empted by the constitution from tax
ation the endowment funds of edu-
cational and religious institutions no
used for profit It Is said that the va-
rious state county and municipal
taxes on this class of property cuts
down to about onehalf the Income
from these funds It seems to mc
that any measure looking to educa-
tional advancement In Texas should
receive the hearty support of every
Democratic voter
The second amendment proposes to
empower counties to levy a tax not
to exceed 15 cents on the hundred dol-
lars valuation for the purpose or pay-
ing jurors The people of the county
have frequently Indorsed this propo-
sition by electing candidates to the
legislature who openly declared for It
The third amendment proposes to
pay members of the legislature 1000
for the first year or their term said
sum payable In Installments or250
on the first days of January Feb-
ruary March and April of the year
succeeding their election For any
called sessions during the second year
each member Is to be paid 5 per day
It Is also provided that members shall
be prohibited from accepting or using
tree passes rrom railroads or accept-
ing or using special privileges and
franks from any corporation whatever
It is clear from this proposition that
the fratnersor the resolution over-
looked the tact that the tefm oiTi3enjc
ator was four years instead ofs two
The manifest operation of this amend-
ment otherwise good would be to re-
quire senators to work the last two
years of their term without compen-
sation This oversight will ot course
dereat the amendment it it is properly
brought to the attention or the people
Every true Democrat should have
his say at the polls if these additions
shall or shall not be made lo ithe or
ganic law of our state
In enumerating the reasons for
Democrats to vote it must not be for-
gotten that there Is an opposition
ticket in the field That there Is sc
little said about it should not be made
a reason for remaining away from the
polls It Is not only a question ot pre
venting Democratic candidates from
being defeated hut of showing hi
such a Democratic majority sis to
teach the utter hopelessness of these
Republican contests In this county
But lastly the one great teason I
would urge Is that or maintaining In
our several district conventions and In
our state convention our proper pres-
tige and power This year Anderson
county seeking to nominate a gover-
nor a congressman a chief Justice or
the Court or Civil Appeals and a dis-
trict attorney was limited In all these
conventions to only six votes On the
same basis the purely Democratic
vote In the primaries would entitle us
to eight votes With what aid w
shall naturally dciive from othei
sources we should be able to give the
Democratic candidate for governor a
least three thousand votes and thus
have ten votes fn the conventions
The Democrats of the county owe It
to themselves to give at the very
least three thousand votes to T M
Campbell for governor
To this end I especially urge the
arious precinct chairmen to IooV
well to the matter or getting out a fill
vote in their respective precincts
The precinct that rails to vote Its
proper number or votes will jwy tli <
penally ror lt Indifference by Its lack
of Mwer In the councils of the part
later in addition lo the consideration
urged above
Let our campaign slogan be Three
Thotiwuitl ror Tom Campbell

Woman is the name of a new magazine for women
TTTe first number is just issued Your newsdealer has it
You can get it from him and it is wdrth your while getting
it There is nothing startling about this magazine TKere
should be nothing startling about a decent magazine for
women and the home But this particular magazine is
unique among all the socalled publications for women
You might not like it a little bit and then again it might
hit your fancy good and hard
If you like fiction good wideawake snappy stories
both serials and short stories you will like Woman
In fact fiction is the big feature of the magazine
All the other magazines for women are cast on the same
model a little bit of fiction a few articles more or less
chit chat some wise advice a fashion department and a
smattering of general miscellany WOMAN doesnt
look any more like this conventional model than a yellow
dog looks like a race horse It is built on new lines for a
strictly womans publication To know what it is like you
will have to get a copy of it It would cost too much to
tell you all about it in this advertisement
The price of WOMAN is TEN CENTS A COPY
and the magazine is a yery big one 192 pages
Br the way two rattling good serial stories begin in this first num-
ber and it contains a big lot of other good things You would
do well to ask your dealer for it before his supply is exhausted
