UNIVERSAL GYM - Senior football boys are pictured here at the various exercise
stations of the new universal gym just installed at a cost of $2495, purchased by the
Archer City Quarterback Club. The gym is not only for the athletic department but
will also be used in the physical education classes at Archer City Schools.

Proven To Be 'Go-Getters’
Mrs. James W. Harvey was
hostess to the Amity Club, Fri-
day, Oct. 8, when they met in
regular session and were enter-
tained by a Music Day program.
Personal
Donna Hill was a Lubbock vi-
sitor over the weekend. She
visited with Carol Groves on
the Texas Tech Campus.
M/Sgt. and Mrs. Irving Burke
of Bozier City, La., visited with
the R A Killians, Sunday. The
Burkes were formerly station-
ed at Sheppard Air Force Base
in Wichita Falls. Mr. and Mrs.
R A. Killian Jr., of Fort worth
were also visitors in the Kil-
lian home during the weekend.
Byron Schlomach spent the
weekend at Breckenridge with
the Bunk Sturgeons.
Mrs. Mike Jackson, Wichita
Falls, reviewed the life of Bee-
thoven and concluded wit ha mu-
sical quiz. Mrs. R D. Schlo-
mach, a guest, presented sev-
eral piano selections to con-
clude the program.
Mrs. W. J. McMurtry, pre-
sident, conducted the business
session and welcomed Mrs.
Schlomach and Mrs. Freida
Comegys of McKinney. Four-
teen members were present.
The next regular meeting will
be in the home of Mrs. C. L
Abercrombie on Oct. 22.

ley of Wichita Falls spent the

Archer City may not have a
state-championship calibre
football team but you couldn’t
tell it by the enthusiasm and
support generated this year by
the Quarterback Club. The club
has now enrolled a record 140
members and with good attend-
ance reported each week at the
regular meeting held Tuesday
night in the PE class room be-
hind the gym.
The club is under the leader-
ship of Bill Crow, president,
Don Rodgers, vice - presi-
dent and Bobby (Clown) Wil-
liams as secretary-treasurer.
The secretary of the group is
a bit modest in reporting fig-
students in the classroom and
and will not report his personal
figures on the membership so-
licitation. But it is a known
fact that Clown is personally
responsible for securing ap-
proximately 40 members for
the club.
While most area booster
clubs sell membership for about
$2.00 the Archer City Clubsets
the assessment at $10.00. From
this membership fee the Club
pays for printing the weekly
football programs, pays all the
expense on purchasing game
films and processing and also
sponsors an all-sports ban-
quet in the spring each year.
None of these are paid for by
the school. Most area schools
pay for the game film and pro-
cessing out of the regular school
budget. The cost of filming the

District Meet
it Jacksboro
The Daughters of Republic of
Texas will hold their district
meet at Fort Richardson in
Jacksboro Saturday, Oct. 16 at
10:30 a.m. A spokesman for
the Wichita Fails Rebecca Jane
Fisher Chapter said that it
would be Guest Day and a basket
lunch will be enjoyed at noon.
Everyone or any organization
interested in history or restor-
ing historical markings are in-
vited to attend. The program
will be the history of Fort
Richardson with W. W. Dennis,
Jack County historian and
author, being the guest speaker.
Cities in this area that com-
prise District II of the Daugh-
ters of the Republic of Texas,
include Abilene, Fort Worth,
Mineral Wells, San Angelo and
Wichita Falls.

team’s games usually runs in
excess of $800 each year. The
all-sports banquet, in which all
athletes, boys and girls, are
feted each year is another big
expense that usually runs in the
neighborhood of $500.
In addition to these regular
expenses the club usually spon-
sors some special projects each
year like the new scoreboard
at the football field that cost
about $1500. This was done
with no cost to the school.
This year the club voted to pur-
chase a new universal gym to
be used not only by athletes but
by students taking physical edu-
cation. The gym, which has al-
ready been delivered and erect-
ed cost the Quarterback Club
$2495. The new gym has 15 dif-
ferent stations in which over
100 various body building exer-
cises can be performed. Physi-
cal education instructors report
that the new addition makes it
possible to handle more
student in the class and perform
more body building drills in a
shorter period of time than in
the past.
The club is now in the pro-
cess of taking donations of $1.00
on a hog that is scheduled to
be given away at the halftime of
the Archer City- Holliday foot-
ball game. The hog will be
processed and wrapped and
ready for the home freezer.
J. Thomas Hulse, a member
and supporter of the Quarter-
back Club, donated the hog free
of charge to the Club.
Officers and directors of the
club have asked The News to
express their appreciation to
the many area people that have
joined the club this year and
supported the athletic teams at
the local school.
