Rose Growing
Handbook Available
A “Handbook for Rose Growing”
is available to readers of The Pharr
Press without charge. The hand-
books, revised as of April 1970, show
classes of roses, uses of roses, plant-
ing and care, feeding, pruning,
spraying and winter protection, di-
rections on cutting rose blooms,
the meaning of dis-budding and
growing of exhibition roses is all
included.

Calendar of Events
The Pharr Garden Club will have
its regular meeting Wednesday,
November 4, at 2:30 p.m. at the
Texan Hotel. The program will be
“Hawaiian Flowers,” colored slides
by Dr. Elzada Clover, president of
the San Juan Garden Club.

The Sorensen School P-TA will
hold its regular meeting on Novem-
ber 3, at 7:30 p.m. at the school
caeftorium. The program for the
evening will consist of a question
and answer session on narcotics,
conducted by Claudio Castaneda,
Sheriff of Hidalgo County. The Fac-
ulty and Parent-Teachers Associa-
tion extends a cordial invitation to
all interested parents.

The Zonta Club of West Hidalgo
County, Inc., a service organization
of executive and professional wom-
en, held their dinner meeting at the
Casa de Palmas Hotel, McAllen, on
Oct. 20, 1970. The Nursing Loan
Fund committee, Mrs. Earl Blon-
deau, Mrs. Sophye Edelstein, Mrs.
W. M. Gleason, Mrs. S. G. Gordon,
Mrs. Ben Hertz, Mrs. Mattie Ippo-
lito, Miss Joan McCarter, Mrs. R. J.
Ross, Mrs. Herman Sugg and Mrs.
W. W. Zimmerman, chairman, were
in charge of arrangements.
Invocation was recited by Mrs.
R. J. Ross. The Pledge of Alle-
giance was given by Mrs. W. E.
Ranz. Mrs. George Finkle, past
Zonta International treasurer of Oak
Park, Illnois, was welcomed back to
her winter club. Three new mem-
bers were introduced: Mrs. R. W.
McKay, Mrs. L. L. Gilmore and
Mrs. George Long.
The program consisted of confer-
ence reports by Mrs. W. L. Arm-
strong, president, as well as resumes
by the 12 members who also attend-
ed the conference. They also model-
led their Japanese Kimonas that
they wore at the Oriental Garden
Party held during the conference to
honor Mrs. Elizabeth Nicholls, who
was elected Lt. Governor of the five-
state District Ten of Zonta Inter-
national. Mrs. Nicholls was present-
ed with a gift from the West Hidal-
go club. Other district officers elect-
ed are Dr. Gwyn Harwell of Long-

of Longview was appointed district
secretary. The newly elected Dis-
trict Ten nominating committee are |
Mrs. Almeda Dorman of Shreveport,
a past governor, Mrs. Frances Bol-
ton of Austin and Miss Jane Greer
of Dallas as chairman. Miss Greer
is the immediate past governor. The
1971 conference will be held in Mc-
Allen.
Mrs. S. G. Gordon, past president
of the West Hidalgo club, is moving
to Dallas. She was honored at the
meeting for her untiring work in
the club and was presented with a
gift.
Birthday greetings were extended
with a remembrance from the presi-
dent, Mrs. Armstrong, and the Oc-
tober horoscope was read by Mrs.
Dillard Dean to Mrs. Earl Blon-
deau, Mrs. W. R. Allen, Mrs. R. C.
Lake, Mrs. Elizabeth Nicholls, Mrs.
S. J. Trevino, Jr., and Miss Dorothy
Whalen.
The West Hidalgo Club was recog-
nized by the entire conference body
as well as the courtesy resolutions
committee for providing the flags of
the 40 Zonta countries complete with
flag poles and stands for the impres-
sive conference opening “Parade of
Flags” with narrations by Mrs. W.
E. Ranz.
The conference Service Award as
well as the Attendance Cup were re-
ceived by the West Hidalgo club.

Visit Pharr Aerie
Mrs. Lucille Wood, state president
of the Auxiliary of the Fraternal
Order of Eagles, will be in the Val-
ley Saturday and Sunday, October
31, and Nov. 1st, to attend the State
Auxiliary Zone Conference, which
will be held at Aerie 3109, Pharr.
Mrs. Wood is of Beaumont, Tex-
as, and is a charter member of the
Auxiliary. She has served in all
offices of the Auxiliary in the State
of Texas. Other state officers will
also be guests of the local Auxili-
ary.
Saturday the Auxiliary will meet j
at 1 p.m. to honor Mrs. Wood and j
have initiation of new members.
Sunday the business meeting will
start at 9:30 a.m. followed with a
luncheon at 1 p.m. at the Texan
Hotel, Pharr. All members are
urged to attend.

Pharr are announcing the arrival of
a 9 pound, 12 ounce son, Rene, born
October 24, at the Suderman Clinic,
Pharr.
ROTARY CLUB
Mrs. Norma Garcia, educational
co-ordinator for the Planned Parent-
hood Center, Mission, was the speak-
er at the Pharr Rotary Club regular
meeting Oct. 27th at the Texan
Hotel. She gave some of the objec-
tives of the organization. She said
that some 7,000 families have used
the services provided but she said
15,000 should be reached in this
county. Biology of the body is also
taught and some sex education is
given to teen agers. The Planned
Parenthood services are needed the
most by the lower income groups,
she said.
Next week, Wayne Elliott will Wiley will be the program chair-
speak on the WIN program. Jimmy ‘ man.
Rev. and Mrs. W. N. Clark were
honored at a reception October 25
at the First Baptist Church in Pharr.
Rev. Clark is retiring after 46 years
in the ministry, 23 years of which
were spent as pastor of the First
Baptist Church in Pharr.
Guests were served from two re-
freshment tables. An arrangement
of bronze and gold chrysanthemums
was used as the centerpiece for one
table and a money tree served as
a centerpiece for the second table.
The money tree, a gift from the
church family and other friends was
presented to the Clarks in apprecia-
tion for their many years of faithful
service. About 175 guests called be-
tween 3 and 5 p.m.
Rev. and Mrs. Clark will be leav-
ing at the end of October to make
their home in Elgin, Texas.
PERSONALS
Leroy Jameton and son Johnny
of Houston were here for a few days
last week as the guests of the Claud
Hills. He attended to business and
then enjoyed several dove hunts
with his son and the Hills.
Mrs. Mack McKay of San An-
tonio was here last week to visit
her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Lloyd
Glover, and her husband’s parents,
Mr. and Mrs. R. ^W. McKay, and
other relatives. Sp-v-ls employed as
secretary to the District Chief Stet-
son G. Reed, of Region V, District
I, of the Texas Parks and Wildlife
Dept, with offices in San Antonio.
He is employed by Southwestern
Bell Tel. Co. as plant assignor. She
came with Miss Judy Turner, who
visited her parents and other rela-
tives in San Benito.

Mr. and Mrs. Herman H. Kehl-
beck of Syracuse, Nebraska, ar-
rived last week to spend the winter.
The Kehlbecks are annual winter
visitors in the Valley and stay in
their mobile home at the Holiday
Village, Pharr.

Mr. and Mrs. Elmer Daily of
Canton, 111., have arrived in the (
Valley to spend their annual winter. [
The Dailys will be in Harlingen un-
til the first of November, when j
they will move to Pharr. They are
members of the Pharr Winter Vis-
itors Club.

Mr. and Mrs. Ed Ouellette of
Quincy, Michigan, arrived in the
Valley to spend the winter. The
Ouellettes are residing at 128 E.
Jones, Pharr. They are annual win-
ter visitors.

Mr. and Mrs. Charles Hutton of
Letcher, So. Dakota, arrived last
week in Pharr to spend the winter.
The Huttons are annual winter vis-
itors in the Valley.

Mr. and Mrs. D. F. Woodcock
have returned to the Valley to spend
the winter. The Woodcocks are
staying in their mobile home at the
Holiday Village, Pharr.

Joseph C. Johnson, 322 E. Kelly,
Pharr, was admitted on October 7,
to the Veterans Hospital in Kerr-
ville. He is in 4A, Room 441. He is
doing nicely, but no date has been
set at present when he will be dis-
missed or be home. Mrs. Johnson
is staying in Kerrville while he is
in the hospital.

Mr. and Mrs. T. A. Peterson of
Harrisonville, Mo., have returned
to Pharr to spend the winter in
their mobile home at the Holiday
Village. The Petersons are owners
of groves in the Valley.

Mrs. Jack Golightly was dismiss-
ed Sunday from the McAllen Gen-
eral Hospital, after being hospital-
ized for a week because of a heart
attack. She is convalescing at her
home, 202 West Gore.
