Kiwanis News
by Milton C. Morgan
Three special presentations were made at the Club meeting on October 19
as past Lt. Govenor Jim Ford of Hillsboro passed out several awards. Al Payne
received a banner patch for an outstanding club 1986 - 87. Skip Reaves was
presented a Kiwanis Certificate as the President for 1986 -87. David Pareya,
Club Secretary, was presented a certificate for his outstanding work. All these
awards were Division 36 awards. Congratulations to all these West Kiwanians
and to the club!
The club had 42 Kiwanians present and an intcr-ciub visit from members of
the Hillsboro Kiwanis Club. They were: Jim and Jan Ford, Jerry Bailey,
Harvey Priebe, Joseph Chillington, Randy Edmonds and Weldon Christian.
Also present were: Mary S ulak and daughter Shani, Dee Ann Reaves and Jerry
Curbo.
The program was presented by Michael White from McLennan Community
College. Dr. White narrated and showed a slide on Snakes of Central Texas:
"The Bad Guys”. There are about 2,000 different kinds of snakes in the United
States and about 36 are poisonous. Five "bad guys” are found in the Central
Texas region. They include Western Diamond Back Rattler, Copperhead,
Cotton-mouth Moccasin, Coral and Massagua which is a type of rattlesnake
found in East Texas.
Dr. White gave the members some characteristics of each and started with
the Western Diamond Back Rattler. This "rascal" is found just about anywhere
in Texas. They are 3 to 41/2 feet long. They are found in rocky places and they
eat bird eggs and rodents. More people die from these bites than any other
snake. The next type of poisonous snake is the Copperhead and they range in
length from one foot to 11/2 feet. These "sneaky creatures" also live in rocky
areas, but they also like to crawl in rubber high-top boots, more especially if the
boots are lying down on the concrete floor of my garage.
"I picked the boot up and just happened to turn it upside down and the
"sneaky culprit" fell out on the floor” he said. They live on insects and are mild-
tempered according to Dr. White, but any snake will "strike” at you as they are

defending themselves.
The next type of snake is the Cottonmouth Water Moccasin. This snake has
various colors as some are brown and others are black. They live near water
and eat frogs and fish and have a "white mouth". Some are three feet in length.
The next kind of snake is the Coral. They are very dangerous. The fangs
of a Coral snake are small so when they bite a person they hold on in a "chewing”
fashion. The poison attacks the nervous system. They eat small animals and
are brown and orange in color.
The last type of snake is called a Massagua snake and it is a type of
rattlesnake found in East Texas. It lives in a grassland area and eats rats, mice
and frogs.
In summing up, Dr. White said that snakes do not go out of the way to bite
people as they will defend themselves when cornered. When you are hunting
or fishing or hiking in wooded areas, one should wear high-top boots. Snakes
are an important part of our environment, he said. A question and answer
session followed.
James "Fanbelt” Maler won the door prize this week.
