MOSTANGS
St Mary’s Falls
To St. Joseph's
Of Bryan 24 - 6
On October 23, the Mustangs trav-
eled to Bryan for their second meeting
with the Eagles. The Mustangs started
slowly as St. Josephs jumped out to an
early 16 to 0 lead in the first quarter.
The half ended with the Mustangs
trailing 24 to 0, but starting to get back
into the game. A couple of missed
passes by the Mustang receivers were
a factor in the lack of Mustang offense
The second half found the Mus-
tang offense and defense dominating
play and culminated with a fourth
quarter 60 yard drive lead by quarter-
back Robby Plsek for the Mustangs
only score.
Outstanding games were had by
Scott Rieger, Justin Kalu2a, John
Jaska and Jeff Nors.
The Mustangs final game of the
season will be Thursday, October 27
at 7 p.m. at the West High School
field.

Athletic Booster Club Report
By Poone Morgan
First Place Marlin to Play West This Friday
Club President Ernie Janck wel-
comed about 30 parents and other
Trojan supporters at the October 19
Booster Club meeting.
Minutes were read by Patty Urba-
novsky and the financial report was
given by Rose Kubacak.
Final plans for the club's Fried
Chicken Dinner were completed.
This event will be this Sunday Octo-
ber 30 at the West High School Ca-
fetorium. It begins at 11 a.m. and ends
about 1:15 p.m. We have ordered
more chicken than any previous fried
chicken day and hope that we have
more than enough. "We will also have
two lines rather than one long line.
The first line as you come in the Ca-
fetorium is for those people who want
to eat there in the Cafetorium; the
other line will be for those people who
want fried chicken to go. We will also
have two serving lines for those
people who want to eat in the Cafeto-
rium.''
Large plates are $4.50 and small
plates are $3.50. The club needs about
40 cakes and pies and ask the Trojan
and Lady Trojan mothers to help us by
bringing a cake or pie on Sunday by
10:30 a.m.
Those Booster Club members who
will help us cut up cabbage and peel
potatoes this Saturday morning,
please come to the WHS Cafeteria by
9 a.m. Bring a potato peeler if you
who was a guest speaker. He dis- have one.
cussed the aspects of vehicle safety.
At the teacher's meeting, the wel-
come was presented by the Superin-
tendent of West I.S.D., Thomas San-
difer. The teachers discussed a date
for the upcoming leadership contests
and approved it.
The three prizes that will be given
away will be on display this Sunday at
the fried chicken dinner. The first
prize is a VCR, the second prize is a
$ 150 certificate from any one Booster
Club Business member and the third
prize is an 80 quart cooler. Tickets are
on sale at both banks, the State Na-
tional Bank, West Bank and Trust,
Grimm's Insurance Agency and
Maler's Texaco. Tickets for these
prizes will be available at the Fried
Chicken Dinner.
A change in the Booster Clubs
meeting place will take place on Nov.
2 when we meet at West High School.
Those sophomore parents took
attendance honors again as they stood
proudly for their son or daughter who
is an athlete at West High or West
Middle School - the Senior parents
followed closely; then our Junior
parents, followed by our eighth grade
parents, then our freshmen parents
and seventh grade parents. Our fresh-
men and seventh grade parents are
urged to attend our meetings, so come
on out and stand up for your son or
daughter.
There are two Trojan football
games left on the schedule and both
are at home on Trojan Field. This
Friday night, the Trojans who played
Robinson a good game, will play the
Marlin Bulldogs. We remember the
exciting game of 1984 when the Tro-
jans came from behind and beat Mar-
lin by a score of 14 to 13. This has to
be one of the most exciting games
ever played by the Trojans. Students
and Trojan fans really got into the
game by the cheers that could be
heard, loud and clear!
The Bulldogs already feel that they
can win, but with Big Red's swarming
the Bulldogs on every play and some
good crisp blocking and tackling, the
Trojans could win! Help us with the
Victory line and wear our colors!
The talented Marlin Bulldogs will
put their District 17-AAA first place
lead on the 1 ine this Friday as they face
the West Trojans in a 7:30 p.m. game
at Trojan Field.
Marlin has a 4-0-1 record as the
district race heads into its final two
weeks. The Bulldogs are 6-0-1 for the
season.
West Coach Mark Johnson de-
scribed this week's opponent as "big
and strong." They operate out of a
split back offense and use a little Wing
T also, he said. On defense, they use a
split defense, similar to West.
Grades may slow the Bulldogs
down some as both their starting quar-
terback and second string quarterback
were ruled ineligible to play the rest of
the season because of grades. Three
other members of the team have also
lost their eligibility because of low
grades.
Despite this, Marlin is not void of
talent. Coach Johnson calls Bulldog
Curtis Modkins (22) "probably the
best back in the district." Modkins
weighs 170 pounds and combines
both speed and power in his running.
Against Robinson earlier this season,
Modkins gained 170 yards rushing.
The West coach also said the Bull-
dog's massive defensive tackle Steve
Massington (240 pounds) was a
powerful force on defense.
For the Trojans this Friday, they
will be trying to regroup following a
22-0 loss to Robinson last week. West
will be without the services of line-
man Mark Davis, who is out for the
season with a knee injury. They also
had two players, one a starter on de-
fense, who were ruled ineligible to
play because of low grades.
Also starting quarterback Bobby
Nors received a bruised leg in the
Rocket game and Coach Johnson said
he did not know if he would be able to
play Friday. If he can, then he will
start. If not, then Bubba Woodard will
take over the quarterbacking reigns.
Because of the number of Marlin
players on their junior varsity and
varsity football squads ruled ineli-
gible because of grades, the junior
varsity has canceled its scheduled
game with West. The West junior
varsity, in turn, will face the unbeaten
Mexia junior varsity in a 7:30 p.m.
game today (Thursday). The West J V
lost two starters because of grades.
The West freshmen, who lost one
player because of grades, will face the
Marlin freshmen in a 6 p.m. game
today (Thursday) in Marlin.
Rockets Shoot Down Trojans 22-0 to Remain in Second Place
Lady Trojans Capture District Title
The West Lady Trojans nailed
down their sixth consecutive district
volleyball title last Friday as they
defeated the second place Robinson
squad in Rocket Gym.
Though the lady Trojans won.
West Coach Pam Johanson said her
squad did not have an easy time.
Robinson beat West 18-16 in the first
of the three game match. The Lady
Trojans then rallied to win the next
two games and the match 15-9,15-1.
"Robinson came after us,” Coach
Johanson said. "They (Robinson)
played probably their best ball of the
year. I don't think we were ready for
them," she added.
On Robinson, she continued, "they
are a well-coached team and their
game plan was attack and that is what

they did."
Coach Johanson pointed out that
the Lady Trojans missed 15 serves in
the first two games and this weighed
heavily in their subpar performance.
The varsity match lasted one hour and
20 minutes and "it was exciting," she
added.
Earlier in the week, the Lady Tro-
jans beat Connally 15-8, 15-3. The
West Coach said West player Dinah
Moore played well against Robinson
and she noted Laura Cinek came off
the bench and played well against
Connally.
The West varsity currently has a
19-5 season record and 12-0 district
mark.
The West junior varsity beat Con-
nally 15-12 and 15-0. There match

against Robinson did not finish be-
cause of the length of the varsity
match. West won the first game 15-7
and the second game was tied at 9-9
when play was suspended.
The West freshmen defeated Con-
nally by 15-3,15-8 scores.
The Lady Trojans have scheduled
a Parents Night for 4:30 p.m. this Fri-
day at Trojan Gym as they play Mar-
lin in their final district game this
year. The junior varsity game will
follow.

The West Trojans put up a staunch
defensive effort against the Robinson
Rockets last Friday despite coming
out on the short end of a 22-0 score
during the District 17-AAA contest.
The Rockets, currently in second
place in district with a 4-1 record,
stayed alive in their bid for a spot in
the play-offs as the win left them
trailing first place Marlin with a 4-0-
1 district mark.
Following a West fumble with
11:15 left in the first quarter, Robin-
son took over with good field position
on the West 36 yard line. Trojan Roby
Urbanovsky helped stopped this drive
as he intercepted a Rocket pass on the
West 16 with 10:12 left in the quarter.
The Trojans again fumbled and
Robinson recovered in West territory
with 8:47 left in the quarter. The West
defense answered this challenge with
a fine defensive effort as they held the
Rockets on four downs and pushed
them back to the West 41 yard line.
With West unable to move the ball,
Robinson got the ball and marched for
their best scoring drive of the night.
The drive ended with 3:12 left in the
first quarter as the Robinson quarter-
back hit his receiver with a six yard
scoring pass. The extra point attempt
was wide and the Rockets had a 6-0
lead.

Following the touchdown, Robin-
son tried an onside kick, but Trojan
Gary Deiterman fell on the ball to give
West the ball with good field position
on the Robinson 49. The Trojans were
unable to score on this series, but
quarterback Bobby Nors had to leave
the game with 2:17 left in the initial
quarter with a leg injury.
West mounted a good drive in the
second quarter, behind second string
quarterback Bubba Woodard, but a
Rocket defender intercepted a Woo-
dard pass on the Robinson 20 yard
line and sped 80 yards for the touch-
down to put his team ahead 13-0 with
8:20 left in the first half.
The Trojans mounted another seri-
ous scoring drive in the second quar-
ter as they drove down to the Rocket
five yard line with 31 seconds left in
the half. On the first down and goal
play from here, a Rocket defender
intercepted a Woodard pass in the end
zone and returned it to the Rocket 45,
stopping the Trojans best offensive
drive during the game.
In the second half, the Big Red de-
fense again stopped Robinson short of
the goal with Trojan Chris Johnson
recovering a Rocket fumble on the
one yard line on a fourth and goal
attempt.
Robinson's only second half
touchdown came with 2:15 left in the
third quarter as they got the ball on the
West five yard line following a Trojan
fumble. A touchdown pass made the
score 19-0.
Jeff Schroeder stymied a Robinson
scoring drive in the fourth quarter as
he intercepted a pass on the West one
yard line with 6:46 left.
Robinson rounded out the scoring
as they kicked a 40 yard field goal
with only six seconds left in the game.
"The kids played hard. I thought
they gave a lot of effort," West Coach
Mark Johnson said Monday. "We
fumbled two times early and that put
us in a bind real quick, but the defense
played tough. We made some mis-
takes that really cost us."
The West coachpraised the Trojan
defense saying that as a whole they
did a good job except for one drive.
There were some big passes that hurt
us, he added. He said Ronnie Sparks
and David Hutyra had good games on
defense.
On the West offensive drive right
before half, he said he was a little
surprised at the success his team had
running the ball against the tough
Rocket defense. The offensive line
did a good job, he noted while adding
that offensive lineman David Hutyra
and David Eubanks had fine games.
West rushed for 150 yards during
the game and Johnson pointed out that
the offensive linemen deserved part
of the credit for that figure. Robbie
McClinton was the leading Trojan
rusher as he gained 83 yards on 16
carries. Woodard was second with 41
yards on seven carries.
Nors and Woodard combined for
80 yards passing for West. Nors com-
pleted three of four passes for 11 yards
and Woodard, three of 11 for69 yards.
Aaron Haskin was the leading re-
ceiver with three receptions for 69
yards.
