Eskew qualifies
for state meet
West Lady Trojan Gessica Eskew qualified for the state
powerlifting meet following her performance in the regional
powerlifting meet last Friday in Lampasas High School.
The West High School junior competed in the 123 pound
class and placed second in her weight division in the meet
lifting 600 total pounds. Gessica squatted 240 pounds, bench
pressed 130 pounds and deadlifted 230 pounds. This was her
personal best for the season and was good enough to top all 3A
lifters in her weight division. Only a 4A lifter finished ahead of
her.
"I am very happy for her," West coach Shane Martin said
concerning Eskew qualifying for the Texas High School Women's
Powerlifting Association state meet on March 16 in Fort Hood.
Another Lady Trojan, freshman Brooke Ferguson, competed
in the 97 pound class at the regional meet and placed ninth out
of the 13 lifters in her division. She was also second among 3A
lifters in the division.
Brooke lifted 145 pounds in the squat events, 60 pounds in
the bench and 205 in the deadlift for a total of 410 pounds.
"It was exciting to watch both Brooke and Gessica. They
competed well and pushed each other real hard," the West
coach said. "The judges bragged on the girls' technique and that
was a compliment to both of them."

Trojan powerlifters
headed to regionals
Saturday in Waco
Several West Trojans are scheduled to compete in the regional
powerlifting meet beginning this Saturday at Reicher High School
in Waco.
Senior Chad Neckar will lead the West team at the meet as he
tops the region in the 220 pound class. Two Trojans have qualified
in the 275 pound class as sophomores Tyler Hykel and Lester
Williams are ranked fifth and seventh individually in their division.
Coby Nemec is ranked sixth in the region and is to compete in the
181 pound division.
Two other Trojans also may compete at regionals. Cody Witt (114
pound class) and Eric Rejcek (123 pound class) rank just above the
top 10 and could participate if someone ahead of them is unable to
compete.
"The boys are real excited," West coach Shane Martin said about
the meet. "They are training real hard. We have high expectations."
The meet is scheduled to begin between 9:15 and 9:30 a.m. and
Martin invites everyone to come and watch the Trojans perform. "It
will be real exciting."

April 7 fishing tournament
The West Trojans battled wet
weather last week and came
away with wins over Early and
Justin Northwest in non-district
high school baseball action.
West senior Joey Kolar helped
his team get off to a fast start on
Feb. 27 as he tossed a no-hitter
against the Early Longhorns.
This was the Trojan's second
game this season and also its
second no-hitter as Brad
Ferguson no-hit an All Saints
team in the season-opener for
West.
The right-handed hurler al-
lowed only two Early batters to
reach base in this five-inning
contest as Kolarstruck outseven
and walked two in earning his
first win of the season. The re-
markable thing about Kolar's no-
hitter was he apparently did not
even throw his best. "He didn't
have his best stuff," West coach
Rich Fontenot said. "He used his
fastball and change up all night.
I think he only threw one curve."
The Trojan offense banged out
II hits against Early pitcher Cole
Doss, who st ruck out two batters
and walked six.
Kolar had a single and double
in the contest with teammates
Heath Keel, Justin Castro, Zac
Zahirniak and GregKasbergcon-
tributing two singles each.
Ferguson had a single in the con-
test.
"Our pitching and defense
exact replicas of the first
game of the year," the West coach
said while adding that the team's
offense had a good performance.
"Anytime you have double digit
hits, you are going to score runs.
We hit the ball real hard."
The game was stopped after
five innings when rain prohib-
ited further play, however not
before the minimum numbers of
innings were played to make it a
complete game. "I wish we could
have played more, I would have
liked to have seen a couple of
more guys play."
The wet weather continued
throughout much of the week
and played havoc with the
Trojan's participation in the
Easton Baseball Tourney in
Burleson. West finally got to play
its first game (and also its last)
in the tourney on Friday as they
faced a Justin Northwest squad
in an afternoon contest.
West scored a run in the first
inning to take a quick 1-0 lead
with Justin Northwest tying the
game on a second-inning score.
The Trojans broke the tie with
two runs in the fourth and three
in the fifth inning to take a 6-1
victory.
Ferguson was the winning
pitcher for West as he threw six
and two-thirds innings with
freshman Josh Orler getting one
out in relief. Ferguson had six
strikeouts, three walks and hit
latter while giving up three
hits. Orler gave up a hit and
walked three. Keith Gelman was
the losing pitcher for Justin
Northwest. He pitched five in-
nings and struck out two West
batters while walking five. Brad
Vick threw the final inning and
walked two.
"Brad struggled as far as hit-
ting spots," the West coach said
about his junior right-hander.
"He found his change up in the
fourth and after that he pitched
well. He is a good pitcher when
he has his fastball and curve, but
he is great when he has his
fastball, curve and change up
(working). He can win with two,
but dominate with all three."
Seven Trojans got into the of-
fensive attack as they each had a
hit in the game. Ferguson had a
double and Kolar, Keel, Castro
(two runs batted in), Zac Brown,
Kasberg and Jeff Zapalac had a
single each.
"Mentally we had a bad ball
game," Fontenot explained. "We
had an opportunity in the second
inning to score a bunch, but came
away without any runs. We had
some mental errors on the base
paths."
He praised the Trojans for
their pitch selection at the plate
so far this year. "Right now we
are being real patient at the plate
and drawing a lot of walks (25 in
three games). If we get on base,
we will make something hap-
pen."
West opened their District 17-
AAA schedule on Tuesday as they
traveled to Gatesville to take on
the Hornets. Today (Thursday),
the Trojans begin play in the
Snyder Tournament as they play
Dumas in a 9 a.m. contest.
"This will be a tough week for
us," Fontenot said. "The kids will
be physically and mentally chal-
lenged. "We are guaranteed to
play four games. Tournaments
basically give us the opportunity
to look at a lot of players on the
team. It gives them a good oppor-
tunity to prove to the ball club
they can play."
Joining West and Dumas in
the tournament, which contin-
ues through Saturday, are
Odessa Permian, Hereford,
Perryton, Lubbock Cooper,
Pampa, Odessa High, Fort Worth
Dunbar, Levelland, Mineral
Wells, Crane and Snyder. "It is
one of the stronger fields I've
seen since I've been coming to
this tournament. Of the four 3A
schools in the tourney (West,
Lubbock Cooper, Perryton and
Crane), all are ranked in the top
15 in the state."
West is scheduled to resume
district play on March 13 as they
are to host the Troy Trojans in a
7:30 p.m. game.

The West Lady Trojans man-
aged to get in two softball games
in between the wet weather last
week and came away with victo-
ries in both as they increased
their season record to 6-1.
The West girls opened the
week with a 6-2 win over the
Robinson Rockettes on Feb. 27
in Robinson. The Lady Trojans
tallied two runs in the second
inning and never looked back en
route to the win. Melissa Maler
connected on a two-run homer in
the third as they went ahead 4-0
while Robinson pushed across
their first run in the fourth. Maler
connected on a solo home run in
the fifth inning with both teams
scoring a run in the sixth.
West pitcher Amanda Horton
went the distance in the game as
she struck out three Robinson
batters and allowed only one hit
while walking three. The Lady
Trojan defense committed three
errors in the game.
The losing pitcher for
Robinson was Kingrey, who al-
lowed four runs and four hits in
four innings on the mound. She
struck out two West batters in
the contest. Four other Robinson
pitchers (Dudik, Bagby, Browser
and Lauderdale) each threw
against the Lady Trojans.
"We might see them
i Robinson) down the road in the
playoffs and it was good to see
just about everyone in their
(pitching) arsenal," West coach
Guyla Smith said about the
game.
Melissa Maler led the West
attack with her two home runs
followed by Amy Hromadka,
Gessica Eskew, Horton, Cara
Maler and Susan Doherty with a
hit each.
"We played well," the West
coach said. "We hit the ball and
made good contact. We are still
working some bugs out in de-
fense and Maler had a big game
at bat."
West then played La Vega last
Friday in a game originally-
scheduled for La Vega, but moved
to West because of the rain.
The Lady Trojans came away
with a 12-0 shutout in the con-
test. West tallied six runs in the
first inning and cruised to the
five inning win. The Lady Tro-
jans added two runs in the third
inning and four in the fifth.
Horton again was the win-
ning pitcher as she struck out
five Lady Pirate batters and
walked one. Ballard was the los-
ing pitcher as she struck out five
West batters while walking nine
and hitting another.
Cara Maler led the West at-
tack with a double followed by
Melissa Maler, Doherty and Amy
Barton, a single each.
"We played solid defense,"
Smith said about her team's win.
"It was good to start off district
with a win and (alluding to the
wet weather) it was good to get it
in."
West continues their district
schedule this week as they travel
to Gatesville this Friday with
the freshmen game to begin at 4
p.m. with the JV contest to fol-
low at 5 p.m. and the varsity
game at 7 p.m. They then will
host Troy in West in a March 13
game.
