West drive set for Thursday at community center
The American Red Cross is scheduled to have a blood drive from
2-7 p.m. today (Thursday) in the West Community Center and it has
issued an emergency appeal to West for help with the blood shortage.
"Our inventory levels remain at less than half of where they
should be and the summer travel season is already upon us," said
Diane Jenkins, senior Texas territory manager for the American Red
Cross.
The Red Cross kicks off its Hot-blooded Texas III summer cam-
paign offering commemorative t-shirts and door prizes to partici-
pants in the West Kiwanis Club sponsored blood drive on Thursday.
"This is the third season for our Hot-Blooded Texan campaign and
this year's shirt is the brightest and most popular ever," said
Jenkins. All participants in today's blood drive are to receive a t-
shirt, a free Pizza Hut meal coupon and the opportunity to register
for door prizes including two round trip Southwest Airline tickets to
any US destination or concert tickets and backstage passes to see
George Strait.
To be eligible to donate blood, a person must be at least 17 years
old and weigh at least 110 pounds. Most medical conditions and
medications do not prevent anyone from giving blood. "We strongly
encourage the community to come out and help us during this critical
blood shortage. Every donation can save three lives," she concluded.
Those needing an appointment are asked to contact Ray Holasek
at 826-4116.

West day care donates almost $2,500 to CF Foundation
The West Parkway Day Care and Learning Center raised $2,453
during its recent fund-raiser with proceeds earmarked for the Cystic
Fibrosis Foundation.
The money was raised through the sale of raffle tickets and
barbecue chickens as the Parkway children, their parents, and
Parkway employees donated their time and effort to the fund-
raising.
"It took a lot of work from the parents," said Debbie Ferguson, the
child care center owner, and "we appreciate it very much."
Last August, West Parkway raised $1,641 for Cystic Fibrosis and
with this fund-raiser the day care and learning center will have
donated $4,094 to the foundation in less than 12 months.
Darren and Carol Wiethorn of West received a bicycle for their
child as a prize for selling the most raffle tickets (329) while James
Whitman and Chris Ferguson donated their time in barbecuing the
chickens.
The raffle winners were: $350, Brian Sembera of West, $250,
Frank Weyant of China Spring; $250, Doug Williams of North
Richland Hills; $75, April Blancett of West; and $75, Jim Lavender
of Arlington.
Cystic Fibrosis is the number one genetic killer of children and
young adults in the United States. According to information from the
CF foundation, this disease causes the body to produce a thick, sticky
mucus which clogs the lungs. This abnormal mucus leads to chronic
lunginfections, fatal lung damage and also interferes with digestion.
The foundation describes CF symptoms as very diverse and
varying in severity, often confused with pneumonia or asthma.
These West Parkway Day Care and Learning Center children hold a sign signifying how
much money they raised for the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation.
