West beats
China Spring
in 17-AAA
basketball
The West Lady Trojans won
their first District 17-AAA bas-
ketball game this season as they
defeated the China Spring Lady
Cougars 59-56 last Friday night
in Trojan Gym.
"I thought we played a good
three quarters," West coach
Randy Ellison said concerning
the victory. "We led the whole
game and then let China Spring
back into the game in the third
quarter."
West came out playing well in
the opening quarter as they
scored 21 points behind Holly
Vernon's seven points and
Samantha Hrabal's six. The West
defense held China Spring to only
10 points that quarter. The Lady
Cougars rallied in the second
quarter narrowingthe West lead
to 32-25.
China Spring followed that up
with a 21 point third quarter as
they grabbed a 46-41 lead. West
fought back in the final quarter
to out score the Lady Cougars
18-10 to win the game.
Deandra Ellison had a big
fourth quarter as she netted six
of her 15 points. Vernon added
five points in the final quarter as
she also scored 15 points in the
game. Hrabal followed with 14
points while teammate Amy
Hromadka chipped in nine.
China Spring's Barrett led all
scorers with 23 points.
"Dee hit some big baskets to
get us back in the game and her
two free throws with six seconds
left helped put. the game away,"
coach Ellison said. With three
girls scoring in double figures
and another with nine, the West
coach is hoping this kind of scor-
ing will continue. "If we can have
four people scoring like that, we
won't have to depend on just one
person."
Earlier in the week, the Lady
Trojans lost to Connally 48-37 in
a game played in the C adet Gym.
Connally had a 11 -6 first quar-
ter lead and were ahead 25-14 at
halftime. The Lady Trojans tal-
lied 13 points in the third quar-
ter as they narrowed the
Connally lead to 34-27. In the
fourth quarter the score got even
closer as the West girls pulled
with four points oftying the game
with 40 seconds left. "We had our
chance, but we let it slip away,"
Ellison explained.
Vernon had a fine game for
West as she led the team with 19
points. She was followed by
Ellison with seven and Kayla
Evans, five. Connally's Candace
Cooks netted 19 points.
The Lady Trojans win over
China Spring completed the first
half of district play as West
played La Vega Tuesday to be-
gin second half action. They will
host McGregor in a 6:15 p.m.
game Friday and then travel to
Gatesville for a Jan. 22 game.
"Maybe our win (over China
Spring) will springboard Us into
the second round. We really are
starting to play better," the West
coach concluded.

China Spring nips Trojans
West Trojan Kyle Svrcek takes a shot over China Spring's Justin MacGibbon
during first half action of the West - China Spring basketball game last Friday in
Trojan Gym.
West Trojan Jared Domangue goes up for a shot against China Spring during
second half action last Friday.
The West Trojans had a rough
week in district basketball ac-
tion as they suffered their first
two losses in 17-AAA competi-
tion losing to both Connally and
China Spring.
The losses move the Trojans
into a tie for third place with La
Vega in sole possession of first
place with a 5-0 record followed
by China Spring with a 4-1
record.
West traveled to Connally on
Jan. 8 and fell by a 74-47 score.
Despite the 27 point losing mar-
gin, Trojan coach Wayne Leek
was impressed with his team's
first half effort. "We probably
played the best we've played all
year in the first half. After the
first two minutes, we really
played well. We did just about
everything we had planned to do
(in the first half)."
West trailed 16-13 following
the initial quarter and had six
players scoring in the second
quarter as they kept Connally's
lead to three points (30-27) at
halftime.
"We were down by three at
halftime and they hit two 3-point-
ers to start the third quarter" as
they grabbed a quick nine-point
lead. "I felt like we were trying to
get it all back in one possession,"
Leek said in describing his team's
third quarter performance.
It was one of those quarters
when little went right for West
as Connally scorched the nets for
23 points (including hitting four
3-point shots) while the Trojans
were unable to score any.
Trailing 53-27 at the start of
the fourth quarter, the West
coach was proud of his team's
efforts during the remainder of
the contest. "The guys came out
in the fourth quarter and didn't
give up, that's a credit to the
kids. When you get down like
that, it is hard to come back."
Quane Pate led West scorers
with 10 points followed by Jeff
Pustejovsky and Isaac Bucklin,
six each; and Justin Boyd and
Clint Sykora, five each.
Connally's Nate Gardner led all
scorers with 19 points.
West then hosted a talented
China Spring Cougar squad last
Friday in front of a large crowd
in Trojan Gym and came just
short of a win as they fell 45-41.
"I thought we played pretty
good," Leek said. "I thought it
was kind of like the first half of
the Connally game. We did just
about everything we planned to
do."
This was a low-scoring con-
test for the two teams as China
Spring grabbed a 12-9 first quar-
ter lead. Brad Raines had a big
first quarter performance for the
Cougars as he netted seven of his
team's points.
China Spring grabbed a 23-17
lead heading into halftime. "They
(China Spring) kind of had an
edge at that time and they con-
tinued their run at the begin-
ning of the third quarter.
Both teams scored 10 points
each in the quarter as Leek said
the momentum began to swing
in his team's favor. "I felt like
they (China Spring) were get-
ting tired and it began to show
later in the game."
Quane Pate and Kevin Poole
led the West squad with 10 points
each in the contest as Jeff
Pustejovsky came off the bench
to net eight. Raines was the high
scorer for China Spring with 17
points.
Despite the two losses, Leek
feels his squad is getting better.
"It we can just keep playing that
well, then 1 feel like we can play
with anyone in district."
West had the undaunted task
of playing the district-leading La
Vega Pirates on Tuesday and
then were to host the McGregor
Bulldogs in a 7:30 p.m. game
Friday in Trojan Gym. This will
end the first half of 17-AAA ac-
tion and West then travels to
Gatesville on Jan. 22 to start the
second half of play in a 7:30 p.m.
scheduled contest.
