Hi! Here it is, another month gone by with only 58 days left in the
year. Pretty soon, some of us will get to see some little 'trick-or-
treaters' out and about. This is the month that the time will also
change on the last Sunday of the month-we get to "fall back."
Let's not forget this Saturday, October 6. The Over 50 Dance Club
of West will be hosting a Battle Dance at the West Fraternal, 1000
No. IH-35, West, Texas. The bands will be Charles Nemec of West
and Jerry Haisler of Temple. This dance will be held from 5:30-10
p.m., so put on those dancing shoes and head on out to the West
Fraternal Saturday night for some good fun and fellowship.
Coming up for next Tuesday, October 9, the West Senior Center
will have a speaker. Pam Gillmore is their speaker, starting at 10:30
a.m. Everyone try and be there, on time, to hear what she has to say.
She will speak on subacute care.
Let's not forget next Thursday, October 11. That is the day that
volunteer, Marilyn Patterson, will be at the West Senior Center to
help anyone with his or her computer needs. She will be very happy
to assist you in accessing benefits and services. She can answer any
ofyour questions that you may have regarding accessing the computer.
Once you learn how to access the computer, you can find lots of
beneficial things of interest and can look them up once you grasp how
to navigate on the computer. It is easier than you think.
Coming up pretty soon is the bus trip to the Texas State Fair on
Thursday, October 18. Thursdays at the Fair are Senior Citizens'
Day, with admission to the fair being free. Cost of transportation will
be $20, leaving Lake Air Mall around 8 a.m., returning by 6 p.m.
Those interested in taking advantage ofthis bus trip, please call 752-
0316 for reservations.
Remember, the monthly birthday party at the West Senior Center
is held on the third Thursday of the month. Also, the Over 50 Dance
Club of West has their monthly dances on the third Friday of the
month. This month, the birthday party will be held on October 18
and the senior citizens' dance will be held on October 19.
Here are some more of those "Marvelously Mature" quotes. "You
are marvelously mature... 1. When you step off a curb and look down
one more time to make sure the street is still there. 2. When your idea
of weight lifting is standing up. 3. When it takes longer to rest than
it did to get tired. 4. When your memory is shorter and your
complaining lasts longer. 5. When your address book has mostly
names that start with 'Dr.' and 6. When you sit in a rocking chair and
can't get it going."
Evelyn Bezdek visited with her Aunt Julie Girard and also with
Emily Horsak at the Town Hall Estates Nursing Home in Hillsboro.
Mrs. Horsak stated that she loves it in the newly remodeled smoke-
free Town Hall Estates in Hillsboro. Evelyn also had a very nice visit
with Jane Turner, the Administrator.
If you need a ride to a doctor's office, clinic, pharmacy, grocery
store or social service agency, be sure and call CTSM Transit at 752-
0497. Transportation out of West and the surrounding areas are on
Tuesdays and Thursdays, with appointments made between 8 a.m.
and 3 p.m. You need to make your reservations at least 24 hours in
advance. Fees for age 60 and over are recommended donation of $4
per round trip in McLennan County and $5 per round trip for an out-
of-county trip. Those of you under age 60 has a $4 required fee for
round trip, in county, and $10 required fee for an out-of-county trip.
I know some of you have been looking for my Aggie jokes and I
have been doing other things lately, but here is one. Three Aggies
were close friends all of their lives. One died, and at his funeral his
two friends viewed the body before the lid of the coffin was closed. "He
sure looks good," said one. "Well, he ought to. He jogged five miles
every day," said the other.
The Czech Stop, Community Grocery and West Food Mart donated
door prize items last week for the West Senior Center. Thanks a
bunch for all of your support. The winners of door prizes were Josie
Kubala, Dorothy Shilling, Stanley Pavelka, Eleanora Muehlstein,
Frank Tichavsky and Mary Grmela. Congratulations!

Welcome to Fall!!!
The seasons are changing and so are the things you can plant. It
is now time to start thinking about replacing the annuals for fall and
winter color. Pansy plants, snapdragons, dianthus, ornamental kale
and cabbage and mums are ready for planting. All of these are
available now, but you still have plenty of time-so do some preparation
before you put anything in the ground.
If your summer annuals are looking worn and tattered or just
plain dead, pull them out and clean the space. Remove the offending
plants and any weeds that may have moved in. If bermuda grass has
invaded the beds then you need to spray it with a herbicide such as
Hi-Yield Killzall and kill it before you do any digging. Just be certain
to not get the herbicide on anything that you want to keep. When the
weeds are dead, then dig into the soil and add compost, such as Back
To Earth soil conditioner. When you get your plants in the soil, then
cover them with a good layer of mulch. Be sure to have some good all
purpose plant food on hand and feed your plants regularly.
Fall is also a good time to plant trees, shrubs and even those crepe
myrtles you have been wanting. There are many good trees to choose
from that you can put out this time of year. There are always the oak
trees, but how about a different variety of oak, such as chinaquin oak,
burr oak, monterry white oak or lacy oak. Everyone has a red oak or
live oak, so plant something different.
If you don't want an oak tree, try a native Texas ash tree. A
moderate to fast growing type of ash tree, native to this part of the
country, it is disease resistant and beautiful red or burgandy fall
foliage. If you want a smaller tree that won't cover up your yard or
if you need a smaller tree for the patio area, try a Texas redbud. This
native redbud will grow to a height of about 10 to 15 feet and is more
disease resistant than the common redbud. It will have the same
spring flowers.
If you want something completely different, try a Texas Bird of
Paradise tree. I could go on listing trees, but shop around and see
what the nurseries have. You might be surprised! Happy gardening!
