School board okays 2003 high school
graduation ceremony for Trojan Field
West High School's senior
class will have its graduation
ceremony in familiar surround-
ings at the end of this school year
as West I ndependent School Dis-
trict board of trustees approved
a request to have the event at
Trojan Field in West.
The decision came at the
board's Oct. 11 meeting after
West High School principal Dean
Blair reported on a poll of this
year's senior class concerning
where they wished to have gradu-
ation. He said a majority of the
seniors (68) wish to have it at
Trojan Field while 40 voted to
have it at the Heart O' Texas
Coliseum in Waco. Those were
the two top vote-getters in the
poll, Blair reported while adding
that West Fraternal Auditorium,
the West High School Audito-
rium and the West High School
gym were also options given this
year's seniors.
Last year, West High School's
graduation was conducted in the
Heart O' Texas Coliseum.
"I think it's their night and if
that is where they want to have
it," board member David Kolar
said concerning the vote to have
graduation at Trojan Field. "I
think its important to have it in
their hometown," board member
Donald Cernosek added while
yet another board member Carol
Waddell said it was her under-
standing the seniors wanted
graduation at Trojan Field be-
cause "they don't feel any con-
nection with the Heart O' Texas
Coliseum."
Having the graduation at ei-
ther Trojan Field or the Heart O'
Texas Coliseum would not limit
the number of guests which cou Id
attend the event, however any of
the other sites would allow for
only a limited number of guests
per graduate. For example, hav-
ing graduation in the new West
High School gym would limit
each senior to only have nine
guests.
Along with approving Trojan
Field for graduation, in case of
bad weather, the event is to be
moved to the high school gym.
The school hoard members
also learned at the meeting that
a Texas Education Agency audit
of the bus routes for the Rio
Brazos Co-op schools, which in-
cludes the West Independent
School District, revealed the coop
had been overpaid by $626,000
by the state.
West ISD superintendent Dr.
Rob Hart reported that the over-
payments had accumulated over
years as a result of inaccurate
mileage figures for the various
school bus routes for the dis-
tricts belonging to the Rio Brazos
Co-op. The state pays a certain
amount of money per mile for the
various bus routes.
Although, Hart was unsure
what this would mean to the
West school district, he did say it
may mean that the school dis-
trict would not receive any new
buses for the next year. "Our
fleet of buses is in good shape
though."
The school trustees also had
over a 30-minute discussion con-
cerning student grading and
class scheduling at the high
school. The discussion involved
the possibility of having a policy
concerning the use of a sliding
scale in the grading system by
teachers.
The discussion on class sched-
uling involved what some board
members described as over-
crowding in some classes, par-
ticularly the science labs, and
the inability ofsome ofthisyear's
freshman to take Spanish due to
full classes. The possibility of
hiring an additional science
teacher and math teacher for the
next school year was also dis-
cussed.
The board asked for more in-
formation concerning class
scheduling, so they could look at
the possibility of passing a policy
on it.
In other board action, the
board accepted the resignation
of West Middle School aide Julie
Mechell and approved transfer
applications for Scott Smith to
West Elementary School and Ben
Smith to West Intermediate
School.
