his safari birthday trip a suc-
cess.
Last week my column was
about our day trip to Wichita
Falls but I didn’t tell you about
our return. What we did on our
way back to West was a split
minute thing and one I won’t
ever regret.
As we were driving through
Mineral Wells it dawned on me
that my Aunt Deede (Wilma
Hruska Crippen) lives in a
nursing home there. I didn’t have
the name of the nursing home
but I figured there couldn’t be too
many nursing homes in Mineral
Wells, but I found out quickly
that there were three.
Fortunately for us, the first one
we came upon was the one Aunt
Deede was in.
"We caught her napping, but
after waking her up, we had the
best visit. She looks so good and
seems to be enjoying her new
place of residence. She asked
about mom, Dorothy Polasek,
Aunt Adele Nemecek, Uncle
Raymond and Aunt Lil Nemecek,
and relatives on the Hruska side
as well as the Schiller side. It
was the first time Bill had met
her and he took a liking to her
right away. If anyone remembers
Aunt Deede, she was always
smiling and she continues to do
just that.
The following morning, after
Mass, I saw Dorothy Polasek and
couldn’t wait to tell her who I had
seen just the previous day. Well
would you believe that Dorothy
already knew all about my visit.
It seems that she had paid a visit
to Aunt Deede about thirty
minutes after Bill and I had left
the nursing home. I couldn’t
believe it. Neither one of us knew
we were going to see her and
when we did it was on the same
day. Isn’t life strange?
The following week I received
a call from my fathers cousin,
Irene Schiller McClain who is in
a retirement home in Temple.
She i nformed me that the Schiller
reunion was the 9th ofSeptember
at the Ocker Brethren Church
just outside of Zabcikville. Well,
guess where Bill and I headed on
Sept. 9? Exactly! Right down 35
to Temple and then onto 53 to
Zabcikville. We had the best time
looking at old pictures, talking
to distant relatives and seeing a
few faces we recognized. Bill ran
into Leroy Simek who he had
seen at Kenneth Popp’s birthday
party. I believe Leroy’s wife’s
grandfather was a Schiller. I, of
course, got to spend some time
with Irene McClain, J. R. Schiller
and Eugene & Evelyn Schiller. It
was such#fun and we plan to go
the next time they have a
reunion.
On the way back we went
through the country. Billshowed
me two houses he and Dan built
By
Jeanetie
Karlik
outside of Zabcikville and another
house they built outside of
Mooreville where Floyd Neel and
his wife live. You know, the older
I get the more I want to avoid the
interstate. I think one of these
days, probably not in my life time,
they are going to have a highway
for 18 wheelers and a highway
for regular four wheel
automobiles. It’s a crying shame
that we have to drive like the
dickens in order to stay clear of
those big trucks. You can get on
the country roads, and they may
not be as smooth as the interstate
and they don’t have as many
lanes, but you see more of the
countryside and you don’t have
the tension of the big highway.
So remember: You don’t
necessarily have to take long trips
or even go abroad where you live
out of suitcases for weeks at a
time. A person can enjoy a day
trip here and a day trip there and
then come back home to sleep in
their own bed. Those little trips
are just as memorable as long
trips and just look; I got two
columns out of two little bitty
day trips. Think about it.
