Well, Westfest mania is over and most had a great time. Many suffered
from heat exhaustion. Our daughter, Kathleen, was among the many who
felt ill. She had to go home right in the middle of the Brave Combo
performance; something I thought I would never see. Kathleen is a die-hard
Brave Combo fan. The weather was really rather hot, but I endured quite
well. I drank a lot of water, along with a few Bohemian soda waters.
Congratulations to Hillcrest Medical Center at West for winning third place
in the Commercial Float entry. There were a lot of people helping with the
building of the float: James O'Barr, Administrator of Hillcrest Medical
Center at West, Dr. Stanley Manax, Milada Mazanec, Bonnie Vicars, Helen
Matus, Steve Podsednik and friend, Christine, Patty McConathy, Mike
James, Leonard Sandifer, Dorothy Uptmor, nurse "Goodbody", JoAnn
Allen, Robert and Phyllis Skidmore, Toni Kaska and Katie and Kelsey
Kaska There was also a mini ambulance driven in the parade by our
Director of Nurses, "Motorcycle Mama", Joy Dyer. A lot of thought and
planning was involved for the float.
Deepest sympathy to the family of Connie Zahimiak Drews who passed
away last week at the age of 50. She fought a valiant battle with cancer, but
lost. I remember Connie when she was much younger-a teenager, full of life.
Connie was so tiny--I was so tall. At the time, I wished I could be just like
her-little. She was a teacher's aide at West Elementary and the children
loved her. Every time I saw Connie, she had a smile. God bless his newest
angel!!!
Lest I forget, following the Westfest parade, Kenneth and I and my sister,
Rose Vrba, daughter and son-in-law, Kathleen and Michael Southern and
granddaughter, Morgan, and daughter Kristen, went to Felix Mynar's bar.
We went to the back room and saw four musicians playing, then there were
seven, and before the afternoon was over, there were 17 musicians, (tuba
player, accordion players, trumpet players, drummer, clarinet players, etc.),
all gathering together for a couple of hours of polka and waltz music. They
took requests from the people and considering none of them had played
together before, the "concert" was great. By the way, Felix has some of the
coldest beer in West. Sometimes the cans have ice on them. See you there
next year!!!
Kenneth and I went to Bossier City a couple of weeks ago and saw Lynn
Anderson ("I Never Promised You a Rose Garden"). She called me on stage,
along with a gentleman, to help her with a song. It was a lot of fun. She is
the most gracious person.
Kenneth and I went to Washington, D.C. last week. I attended a
Consumer's Product Safety Commission/National Electronics Injury Sur-
veillance System seminar in Bethesda, Maryland. One of the major topics
brought up was the recent Firestone tire recall and the safety of the Ford
Explorer (TRADEMARK). Everyone is asked to report any injury caused by
a product. If you do not know who to report to, please contact me at 1-254-
822-1678.1 will be happy to help you get in touch with someone who can help
you. I'm talking about any product you use-toothbrushes, walls, floors,
trailers, etc. Any product that is recalled is because you cared to help keep
you and your fellow citizens and family safe.
Consumers on the Leroy-Tours-Gerald Water Supply Corporation are
experiencing a lot of fading or bleaching of clothing. I once tested the water
about six years ago and found that there was enough chlorine in the water
to swim safely for one day. That's a lot of chlorine. Who will pay for our
damaged clothing-since ther£ seems to be no reason for the large faded out
spots on our clothing.
St. Martin's annual parish picnic will be held on Sunday, September 24.
A fried chicken and sausage dinner with all the trimmings will be served.
There will be an auction, children's games, country store, flea market,
horseshoe pitching, bingo, plenty of German Bohemian soda water and good
fun. Set-up for the picnic will be at 9 a.m. on Saturday, September 23. Any
able-bodied male or female is asked to help.
Just a little over three months to Christmas.
Hope everyone has a great weekend
