SPJST Lodge #6, Cottonwood, honored
The Penelope Cast and Crew gave it their best shot and did
super-but wasn't enough to advance to state with their play. From
all that I heard, we should have won. We did walk away with a
couple of well-deserved awards: Joe Harlin, Honorable Mention
and Biromian Ashley Adams-All Star Cast! Great job everyone
and congratulations for all your hard work and dedication to win
district and area to even make it to regional. The date the play will
be performed for local folks is to be announced.
This past weekend I attended the wedding of my great nephe w,
Larry Brown, Jr. He and Stacy Smith were married at the Family
Worship Center in Waco with the reception following at Northwood
Inn. It has been some time since our family has had a wedding to
eiyoy and it was quite an afffair. I don't know all of Stacey's family
or their friends (yet), so will just tell you about our side of the family
that was in the wedding. Dorleen Merenda Brown and Larry
Brown, Sr. of course are the parents of the groom. Larry Jr.'s dad,
Larry Sr. was his best man, his Uncles Vince Brown and cousin
Alan Brown were two of the six Groomsmen, sister Jennifer
Benjamin was one of the six Bride's Maids, Ring Bearer, Adam
Benjamin,(Jennifer's son), Flower Girl, Hannah Brown (Vince's
daughter), and his Uncles Greg Brown and Jerome Merenda were
Ushers. Of course I beamed with pride as those I love passed. To
be apart of such a wonderful family has been one of my most
cherished blessing in life. As part of the procession, I experienced
something new in a wedding, bagpipes! Awesome! The marriage
ceremony was so filled with the couple's very obvious dedication
to God that it brought tears to the eyes of many. I have had the
privilege of hearing Stacy sing before, but her sweet voice as she
sang a special song to Larry, Jr. during the ceremon was beautiful
beyond words. Her parents, Sharon and Calvin Smith have a lot to
be proud of in Stacy in many ways. The wedding party went to the
reception in a Limousine, but when the couple left, they were
"chauferred" to their "get-away" vehicle by my brother, Vic and
wife Carolyn Brown (Grandparents) in one of Vic's newest toys-
1941 light blue Super Delux Ford in super original prime condi-
tion. Now that's style!
After the wedding, daughter Genevieve and husband Kevin and
daughter Ginny met up with daughter Denae and boyfriend Henry
to celebrate DeNae’s 21st birthday that was April 16. (never have
any trouble remembering her birthday as it is the day after taxes
are due!) In honor of my late husband, Tony, we started out at
Johnny Carrino's Restaurant for a little Italian flavor before
making a few stops during the evening to celebrate it the way they
(deNae and her dad) had planned it. Of course it wasn't the same
without him. .never will be, but we did a bang up job trying! Being
with my girls is always a good time no matter what the day, time
or occasion.
Speaking of marriages and celebrations, I read recently where
the son of Clarence and Susan Janek of "Mt. Calm", Clarence
"Shorty" Sidney Janek, Jr. will be getting married soon. I guess I
have just always considered them from "Birome" since they live on
the hill just up the road from where Clarence's grew up and his mom
and dad lived. The future groom is the grandson of Mary and the
late Joe Jaska of Penelope and the late Mr. and Mrs. SidneyJanek.
Congratulations one and all!
The Penelope Volunteer Fire Department, thanks to many of
you, had another successful fundraiser Sunday afternoon with
dinner, games raffle and auction. Please know it wouldn't be a
success without the hard work of the volunteers, their families, the
Penelope Catholic Church members, and the surrounding folks
who just flat care and come and support their efforts.
The doors of The Birome Church were opened for the final
Homecoming of Geraldine Sanders Carter who was born April 3,
1920 and went to be with Jesus, Thursday, April 18, 2002. Visita-
tion was in Hubbard at Wade Funeral Home on Sunday, April 21st
from 3-6 p.m. and the funeral was on Monday, April 22nd at 2 p.m.
at the Birome Church. A lunch for the family and friends was held
at noon before the funeral at the Birome Church Annex-fondly
known as The Birome Community Center. Interment was at Mount
Antioch Cemetery in Mount Calm. At the burial, her grandson,
Charles played the accordion as a last tribute. Such beautiful
wonderful music. Survivors are Daughters, Scharlet and husband
R.C. "Joe" Mikeska Jr. of Temple; Denise and husband Ed Strayer
of Austin. Grandchildren: Charles & wife Denise Mikeska of
Temple, Scarlett Mikeska of Irving, Sharia Mikeska of Temple,
Justin Strayer of Austin, and Great-grandson, Ray Mikeska of
Temple. I do not remember "Gerri”, as she was fondly called during
the celebration of her life ceremony. I looked at the many pictures
of her and tried to remember. I am sure I met her at least once. She
was a friend of my mom, the late Mozelle Brown Austin and friend
of Zoie Cantrell Bardeman, and many others of their generation,
and she attended many of the Birome Homecomings. Now I am
friends with her daughters. "Gerri" as I will call respectfully her
(my mom always taught us not to call elders by their first name),
was the wife of the late J.W. "Jake" Carter Jr., and daughter of the
late Herman and Ruby Sanders of Birome. She was 82 when she
died. She spent her last years in a special home in Temple for those
with Alzheimers. A difficult journey to the Promise Land for both
her and her family I am sure. But death did not have a "sting" for
her. She was a devout Methodist and secure in Christ as she
witnessed to many in her lifetime, and even in her passing as it was
told of how God centerd her entire live. There is not enough time
this week to tell more about her, but I plan to very soon. Even in
her last goodbye in Birome, she brought joy to oy r little community,
her little community. As we prepared by spiffing up the place for
her Homecoming; mowing and cleaning by us "now" Birome resi-
dents, she was remembered. Bernie Svacina, who mowed the
church yard (with Gerry Kasberg) once leased and farmed land
owned by J.W. and Mrs. Carter, Debbie Christian Coe, who helped
clean, is the grand-daughter of the late Burian Christian and of
Luclla Christian, now reside in West, and myself, who all represent
a gener ation passed down of caring. Of course Gerry & Lisa
Kasberg (helped mow/clean) are, even after years of living in
Birome, of a new and nonconnected to any of the elder Biromian
generation, but are proud to be Biromians in the spirit of those like
Jake and Geraldine Carter. So its farewell to a fine lady in the only
style Birome can give..with love.
Weil, until next week may you live by the 23rd Psalm. "The Lord
is my shepherd, I shall not want" and in doing so your life will be
complete as you complete the Psalm.

Hi! I am getting this news ready on a Sunday afternoon and it
seems like a week or more that I have wondered what the sun really
looks like. Probably just as well, since it would probably be a lot
hotter with the sun beaming down than what it has been.
First off, let me remind you of two great gospel shows coming up,
featuring Al Brumley, Jr. It will be "Gospel on the Brazos" at the
Texas Playhouse Theater, University Parks Drive and 1-35, Waco.
Last year's shows were a sell out and many had to be turned away.
So hurry and get your tickets. The shows will be on May 4 at 3 p.m.
and 7 p.m. The tickets for these shows will be $15 each. Call 662-
9000 and reserve your tickets. There will be songs like "I'll Fly
Away", "Turn Your Radio On", and lots more.
Branson on the Brazos' next showing will be May 18 at 7 p.m. It
will be "Swinging 60s and 70s, featuring songs from country, pop
and jazz from this era. Lots of upbeat fun! Then June 1, Talent
Search Finals II will be the feature. Oh yes, Charlie Burch is
wanting to do a new CD. You can preorder these at a discounted $2
off for either tape or CD. Prices are $10 for a tape of $13 for a CD
when you preorder. Some of you may have received an order form.
If not, just call 662-9000 and leave a message, and they will be back
in touch.
You only have till next May 1 to reserve lunch at the 4th annnual
Senior Solutions. The program will be from 8:30a.m. until 3:15 at
the Waco Convention Center. Admission, services and food are free,
but you need to RSVP for the food. There will be live entertainment,
exhibitors, special presentations, valuable information, door prizes,
and guess who? Rusty Garrett will be there, along with Jack Smith.
For reservations or information, call 254-756-7822 or 1-800-460-
2121.
Coming up May 1 is Women's Day 2002. Their theme is "Women
Today-In Harmony" with the style show by Sears. It will be at Sul
Ross Senior Center, 15th and Waco Drive, Waco. You are invited to
come be a part of the music of life and enjoy special speakers, style
show and roast beef luncheon. Cost will be $2 for 60+ seniors and
$5 -60 seniors.
Now you definitely want to keep this date in mind-May 15. It will
be the annual seniors' picnic with their theme being "This Is My
Country." It will be at Bledsoe Miller Acitivity Center 300 Martin
Luther King Blvd., Waco. There will be music, food, fun, bingo,
domino/42 tournaments, cakewalk, health screenings and more.
Picnic lunch costs $2 for people 60 years of age or older. You will
need to get your tickets from your local senior centers.
I think it has been a while since I had any of those "A" jokes. Let's
do some 1-liners this week. "Did you hear about the Aggie football
player who demanded a 50 percent discount from the chiropractor
because he was a halfback? Did you hear about the Aggie who put
snow tires on his car, and the next day they melted? Then there was
the Aggie math major who had just learned to count to 21, when he
was arrested for indecent exposure."
The West Senior Center had their birthday party last week at
the center. Only one lady was there with an April birthday.
Birthday Wishes to Louise Sparks, and to all with a birthday this
month.
The Czech Stop and Community Grocery were the donors of door
prizes to the West Senior Center last week. The winners of door
prizes were Bill Mangrum, George Shilling, Gertrude Kozina, Nell
Shields, and Marie Horak. Congratulations!
Talent without discicpline is like an octopus on roller skates.
There's plenty of movement, but you never know if it's going to be
forward, backwards, or sideways.
Meals at the West Senior Center for the week of April 24 through
May 1:
THURSDAY: Hamburger patty on bun, lettuce/tomato onion/
pickles, crispy potoates, hot peach slices and milk.
FRIDAY: Hoagie sandwich, shredded lettuce, sliced tomatos,
beet salad, peanut butter cookie and milk.
