Benefit for Nona Gerik set for May 23
A benefit for West resident Nona Gerik is scheduled for May 23
at Tours Hall in Tours. A dinner consisting of fried chicken and
country sausage with all the trimmings is planned from 11
a.m. - 2 p.m. with an auction scheduled to start at 12:30 p.m.
There will be entertainment beginning at 11 a.m. and raffle
prizes will be given away. All proceeds will go to help defray
medical expenses for Mrs. Gerik, the wife of Marvin Gerik.
Anyone wishing to donate anything for this benefit may con-
tact Lucille Lednicky at 826-3741 or 826-3198 or Rose Kubacak
at 826-5333 or 826-5250.
West EMS Benefit Dance this Saturday
A benefit dance for the West Volunteer Ambulance Service is
scheduled from 8 p.m. - midnight this Saturday at Tours Hall.
The Texas Knights, with Casey Kelley, are to provide the
music. Admission is $5 per person.
WHS Spring Drama shows scheduled
The West High School Drama Department is planning to have
spring shows for the public. On May 18, two shows of the play
"The Diner" are planned in the high school cafetorium. This
show is a comedy about the life of people who frequent a quaint,
little diner called 'Ed’s." The first show at 6:30 p.m. is a non-
musical version and the second show at 7:30 p.m. is the musical
version. Two days later (May 20), the drama department is to
perform "The Fledgling" at 7 p.m. This show is described as a
strange tale of fiction and suspense. Admission price for each
show is $1 for adults and 50 cents for students. All proceeds will
be used to help purchase costumes for future shows.
West chamber planning quilt show
The West Chamber of Commerce is planning a quilt show on
July 17 in conjunction with the First United Methodist Church's
Christmas in July event. The two events are both set for the
church in West. The chamber has their monthly meetings on
the third Monday of each month and all members are invited
to attend.
Boys baseball signups
Any West area boy, ages 15and 16or 17and 18, wishingtoplay
summer baseball is asked to contact Barrett Ivy at 822-1901 or
John Croll are 826-5253.
Cemetery group to sponsor fund-raiser
The Prairie Grove (Greeny) Cemetery Association is sponsor-
ing a Bake Sale and Craft Sale beginning at 8:30 a.m. this
Saturday in the cemetery's parking lot near Aquilla. The
cemetery group is also needing baked groups and crafts to sell
at the fund-raiser and is asking those interested in donating
items to this event to bring them on May 15. All proceeds are
to go toward cemetery maintenance.
Baptist church planning revival
The First Baptist Church ofWest is planning a one-day revival
for this Sunday. Evangelist Jay Breland is to conduct the
revival with one service planned at 8:15 a.m. followed by
another service at 10:45 a.m. There will be a pot-luck lunch
with a devotional and message at 6 p.m. Breeland was or-
dained to the ministry in 1970at Orchard Hills Baptist Church
in Garland and has served as a full-time vocational evangelist
for 30 years and has been in the ministry for 36 years. He is a
member of the First Baptist Church in Sunnyvale and served
as vice-president of the conference of the Texas Baptist Evan-
gelists in 1989-90.
RVOS Lodge 46 plans family day
RVOS Lodge 46 has scheduled its annual Family Day for this
Sunday at Cottonwood Hall. The hall is to be open at 11:30 a.m.
with the meal to be served at 12:30 p.m. Members are asked to
bring pastries for desserts.
Mom's Night Out set for Thursday
The Circle of Moms will have their monthly 'Mom's Night Out'
at 6:30 p.m. today (Thursday) at Ninfa's Restaurant in Waco.
A carpool is to leave the West Community Center at 6 p.m. with
all moms and expectant moms invited to join the group. The
group's program this month is planned at 6:30 p.m. May 25 in
the West Community Center. Becky Hurst, an Axtell Elemen-
tary music teacher, will speak on the powerful effects of music
on young children. For more information, contact Mary Wolf at

Trojan Band Banquet scheduled
The West Trojan Band Banquet is scheduled for 7 p.m. May 17
in the West High School cafetorium. Those planning to attend
are asked to RSVP by calling 826-3140 or 826-5829.
Memorial Day Service planned
The West Brethren Church will have its annual Memorial Day
service at 1:30 p.m. May 30 at the West Brethren Cemetery
(just off FM 1858 approximately four miles west ofWest).
Annual Twirl Camp planned in West
West High School twirlers will have their Annual Kids Twirl
Camp from June 7-11 for any girl pre-K age through the eighth
grade. The camp is planned from 9 a.m. - noon each day in the
West High School Band Hall. The cost is $30 each or $25 each
for two or more. May 21 is the deadline to register and
registration forms are available at West Elementary School or
West Middle School. For further information, call Leslie Lee at
826-7214.
West garden club plans meeting
The West Bluebell Garden Club has scheduled a meeting for
9:30 a.m. May 21 in the West Public Library. New officers are
to be installed at the meeting and guests are welcome to
attend.

Park restoration
group plans
fund-raiser
A local children's group raising money to aid in the restoration of
the West City Park has scheduled its second annual garage sale for
this Saturday in the West Community Center.
The group, named Children for Park Restoration, has scheduled
the sale to begin at 9 a.m. and continue through 2:30 p.m. The sale
will offer items ranging from clothes of all sizes to household
furniture and exercise equipment.
Anyone wishing to donate items for the sale is asked to bring the
items to the community center after 4:30 p.m. this Friday. Any items
left unsold will be donated to charity.
All proceeds from this sale will be deposited in the Park Restora-
tion Fund at State National Bank and the money in this account is
to be presented to the city to help defray the cost involved in restoring
the park. The city is currently applying for a government grant for
the park's restoration.
The West City Council plans to apply for a Texas Parks and
Wildlife grant to aid in the financing the proposed renovations to the
City Park. The grant calls for 50-50 funding and the Children for
Park Restoration are raising money to help the city in raising their
half of the funds.
The master plan for the park includes renovating the restrooms,
buying and installing new playground equipment, upgrading the
tennis court and basketball goals, adding a sand volleyball court
along with putting up a fence around the park. A walking trail
around the park is also included.

Retiring Penelope Supt. Sparks
to be honored at May 20 reception
Penelope Independent School
District Board of Trustees are
inviting area residents to attend
a reception honoring retiring
Superintendent Billy C. Sparks
from 7-9 p.m. May 20 in the
school's cafeteria.
Sparks has been employed at
Penelope for 16 years, 13 years
as supertintendent and three as
principal.
The school's trustees are in-
viting his friends, family and com-
munity members to attend the
reception honoring the retiring
superintendent.

West bank names scholarship winners
West. Bank and Trust an-
nounced on April 16 the three
area students chosen to receive
junior college scholarships from
the bank.
West Bank and Trust has
awarded three one-year Junior
College scholarships yearly since
1968 and this year's winners are
Kimberlee Watson, Melesa
Croford and Sarah Doherty.
Kimberlee is a Penelope High
School senior and the daughter
of Larry and Jane Watson.
Melesa's parents are Michael and
Marsha Croford and she is an
Abbott High School senior. Sa-
rah is West High School senior
arid is the daughter of Jimmy
and Kathy Doherty.
The bank's scholarships are
awarded to graduating seniors
from area high schools and pays
for tuition, textbooks and or/re-
quired materials and fees to
McLennan Community College,
Texas State Technical College or
Hill College.
The students chosen, exem-
plify academic excellence, and are
selected by a committee of school
administrators from West,
Abbott, Aquilla, Bynum and
Penelope.

last Thursday in conjunction with the National Day of Prayer
that day. In the top photo, residents bowed their heads in prayer
during a prayer service in the Gazebo on the West City Hall
