Do you know what really hacks
me off? Companies that get to
someone where it really hurts.
Right in the old pocketbook. And
believe you me, I’ve been there.
The older I get the more I seem to
get shafted even though I think
with age comes wisdom. I think
that maybe I catch on quicker
but it’s usually after the fact.
I could write a book on the
many times I, as a single female,
have been taken to the cleaners,
so to speak. 1 could write another
book on the many times my
daughter has been at that same
cleaners. It’s not just, me, it’s not
just her, it’s everyone. I don’t
think there’s a person around
that can honestly say he or she
hasn’t been had at least once in
their lives. I’m not talking about
scams where people call and want
you to give money or your credit
card or whatever. Or the guy
that said he would bring someone
groceries and walked off with the
person’s money. I’m talking legit
businesses getting to you.
Bill still razzes me about the
brake job I got from a place in
Wacothatshall remain nameless.
It was soon after I moved back to
West and, because my breaks
were squealing a bit, I took my
car to have it checked out. This
place originally said that it would
probably cost me a little over a
hundred dollars but once they
got the wheel off and all of that
“stuff that surrounds the breaks
was lying around on the floor,
the price sky-rocketed to well over
a thousand dollars. Oh sure, the
guy came out and showed me a
part of the wheel I think, and
used these big stupid words that
sounded good to him, I’m sure,
but were meaningless to me and
tried to explain why I needed all
of this done. I didn’t understand
any of what he said except the
price. And the thing that
infuriated me the most was I sat
there and watched him do this to
me and to another lady that
walked in after me. Exact same
problem; exact same everything,
even price. She actually cried,
but to no avail. I get upset even
writing about it and it’s been
three years ago.
Then there are health
insurance plans. When HMO’s
first came into being they were
fairly reasonable for the
individual person havingtohave
insurance. It was cheaper to go
with them than stay with the 80/
20 paying insurance. Now the
HMO’s have skyrocketed too.
When I worked for the doctor I
looked at insurance at a different
angle. Too much paper work, to
much precertification, to much
denial, too much everything.
There were certain insurance
companies I never wanted to
work with. Now I’m looking at
them from the other side of the
fence and they make me mad in
a different way. Insurance
companies just drive me up the
wall. They too, can take you to
the cleaners.
Next we go to the grocery store.
Remember when you could buy
sugar in a five pound bag and it
was "x" number of dollars and
then they reduced it to a four
pound bag for the same amount
of money. No price increase but
By
J eanbtie
Colley
less for the dollar. They’ve done
the same with coffee. This makes
me mad. I realize that prices have
gone up, especially when it comes
to groceries but can’t they give us
the same amount we used to be
able to buy? There are many other
items in the grocery store that
have changed in size but my
column would extend into next
week’s paper if I listed all so I
won’t continue on that subject.
I've been taken advantage of
by a roofing company, a lawn
service company, an air-
conditioningcompany, numerous
plumbing companies, a filling
station, a jewelry repair store
and on and on and on. Each and
everyone of them have had a
letter written to them by me,
complaining of their service. A
friend of mine once told me that
there were businesses all over
Dallas that had my picture on
their wall with the notation
“Don’t do business with this lady,
she’s a loon.”
Fortunately 99% of the people
who own businesses here in West
are honest and do not try to drain
your pocketbooks. They know
that in a town this size it makes
sense to be competitive,
reasonable and fair.
So remember: always know
that when you are taken
advantage of and it hits you in
the old pocket book you are not
alone. Think about it.

For You've many things to do.
But when sorrow overcomes us,
Well, we need to talk to you.

Genetic cause of nail-patella syndrome
might shed light on other diseases
HOUSTON - Mutations in a
gene called LMX1B can cause
nail-patella syndrome, a rare
condition that causes abnormal
fingernails and prevents the de-
velopment of kneecaps. People
with this condition also have joint
and bone abnormalities and
might develope glaucoma and
kidney failure.
"Now that we have found a
gene that affects the develop-
ment of nail, skeletal, kidney
and eye tissue, researchers might
look for similar genes that con-
trol development of these types
of tissue," said development in
these tissues, we might better
understand how common condi-
tions such glaucoma and kidney
failure arise."
Researchers at Baylor and
M.D. Anderson Cancer Center
collaborated on this discovery.
